Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Has anyone ever used Space Bags?

I have been saving all of DS's clothes in case our next child is also a boy.  We are moving from Houston to Chicago in 4-5 months and I'm trying to start packing now.  Does anyone know anything about Space Bags?  Would you recommend them?  Thanks!

And if anyone else has any other advice about making a cross-country move with a toddler, I'll gladly accept it.  We moved here from Michigan about 4 years ago, and it was rough. And that was just DH and me.  I'm SO excited for this move but I'm dreading the actual process.

Re: Has anyone ever used Space Bags?

  • I tried them about 10yrs ago when packing to move to the UK. They didn't work a bit. Not sure if it was the bags or my vaccuum cleaner, but I was not impressed and they were returned.

  • We use space bags and they are great.  Lots of toys, books, movies and anything to keep the tot entertained on the trip.  Depending on how many hours you plan to drive a day, take a break at least every 4 hours just to stretch and walk around.

  • I bought Space Bags maybe 5 years ago for under the bed storage for some clothes.  They totally leaked and didn't stay sucked flat.  Maybe they have improved since then, but our experience was so bad with them that I have never bought another set.

  • I live in a small space so we use them and like them pretty well.  I'd think for moving they'd be fine.  I'd recommend filling them a couple days before you leave though or "test" them by filling them up with other stuff first though.  We had one or two in our box that had a break in the bag and would just re-inflate. Btw, we use our regular vacuum cleaner but we have a powerful handi-vac that worked great too.

  • I use them to store blankets, sheets and stuff like that and they work great!!! Go on ebay though if you do buy some, you can get them much cheaper there!

  • I have used Space Bags in the past.  Initially they will vacuum flat but then leak as time goes on and expand.  I still use them for storage though as I have not found any other bag that seals as easily as they do.
  • Love them. All of the stuff DS has outgrown is in them.

  • We have used Space Bags for years (since college).  We just recently within the past 6 months bought some more.  I think they have improved the quality within that time since we last used them.  We did the same thing; put all of DD's outgrown clothes in them for future babies.  We packed them away back around Christmas time and then moved cross-country ourselves.  Yesterday I actually had DH take them out so I could go through them for DD#2 and everything was just the same as we packed it away (just really wrinkled)!  My suggestion is not to overfill them and they will collapse just fine.

As for moving, is it possible to take a plane to your new place?  That is what we ended up doing, but only because I was 28 weeks pregnant at the time.  I don't know, I may of still flown even if not pregnant because 25+ hrs. in a car with a toddler didn't seem like a good idea to me.  If you can swing it, I'd fly.
