Tilly vs. Tillie clicky poll

DD is Matilda Louise, and we call her Tilly/ie 90% of the time.  Since it's just a nickname, we never settled on a spelling for it.  The day we brought her home, H called her "Tilly" on Facebook, so that's how everyone has been spelling it since.  I prefer Tillie, however.  It doesn't really matter, obviously, and I'm sure DD will decide for herself eventually (if she wants to go by this nickname at all).  Because it isn't her legal name, I'm not even sure that we have to agree on a spelling until...until she learns to write I guess.

I'm curious, though:

  • I voted for Tillie.  I could ask the same question about Milly/Millie.

  • I could read Tillie as Till-lie, so I chose Tilly. Cute nn :)

  • I wouldn't use either one. Not my style. EDIT I wanted to add I would just use the full name. I like using longer names for girls.
  • I tend to prefer "y's" typically...I think they look more feminine and class(y) :)

    I also love nicknames! Cute!

  • I like the "ie" spelling better, but if your DH has already been using "y", I don't see a reason to change it.

  • I've thought more about it and I think I'm going towards the "ie" because most other names I like end with it.  Hattie, Mattie, Maddie, Callie, Katie.  But there are some that end with "y" like Jenny, Ginny, Emmy.  Hmmmm, is there a nick name guide?

  • Eh, both look pretty good to me. I say just keep it Tilly, since your DH already set the precedent. Do you call her Tilly all the time, or is it more of an affectionate, family name?
  • I grew up with a great aunt Matilda who went by Tillie, spelled that way, so that's how I would spell it.

  • Lucy Maud Montgomery says it's "Tillie." Because I'm such an Anne of Green Gables fan, that's how I would spell it. It just feels right! :)

  • My DD goes by Tillie. For the most part, we use her nn as her name and that's how we've always spelled it.  I remember sitting in the hospital going- crap, how do we spell her nn? Our last name ends in -ley, so we figured -lie would look better. I think either way is fine though.

  • I much prefer Tillie. It looks more vintage to me (in a good way).

Vintage -ie names are poised for a comeback, as many (if not most) girl names a hundred years ago ended in -ie.

  • Tilly. The IE spelling is a little fussy for me (yet I prefer Millie, so....hell, I don't know).

LOVE that nickname, by the way.
