3rd Trimester

Maternity Bridesmaid

Question for all you 33 week bumpies; I am scheduled to be a bridesmaid in August. I  will be 33 weeks pregnant. I am having a hard time choosing a dress, since I have to order it so early. Can you give me an idea of the size of bump to expect? I know ALL pregnancy's are different but maybe if I got an average I could guestimate!? Maybe? Your help is highly appreciated!

Also taking any other tips and hints for being an 8 month pregnant bridesmaid!

 Thanks! Mama P

Re: Maternity Bridesmaid

  • I am 30 weeks right now. Before I was pregnant, I was a size four (sometimes 2 if the dress was flowy). If I were to get a dress right now, I would probably need an 8. (if it was empire waist and was flowy over the belly. If it was a tight fitted dress, every aspect would be a 6-8, but the belly area would have to be let out a whole lot!

  • When you go to try on a dress, I would take a large pillow with you to fit up under it and make sure it is going to fit.  Everyone carrys differently, but at this point, I look like I am carrying a small basketball.  Good luck!

  • It is so hard to predict.  Make sure you whatever you get has an empire waist.

With my first, I carried her higher and looked a lot bigger.  With this one, sitting down at a table in a restaurant, some people wouldn't even notice that I am pregnant.  With both pregnancies, I gained minimal weight (15 lbs with my first and 10 with this one so far - little over 3 weeks left).

But on the other hand, some women balloon up like Jessica Simpson!

  • I'd order at least two sizes up if not more depending on the syle of the dress, and probably get an extra yard or two of material.  As others stated, you'll be better off with an empire waist dress if you have a choice, bit if not - definitely extra material!

  • I'd opt for an empire waist, at least a size or two bigger with the ability to be let out (a seamstress can look at the seams and tell you) and have fabric added if need be. Most designers will sell extra fabric so I wouldn't hesitate to order a yard or so extra to have just in case.

  • I will be 34w as a bridesmaid next month.  They took myeasurements at like 12w (not really any different than my normal measurements) and we went up 2 sizes.  We ordered the same dress as the other BM's.  The other girls ordered the tea length dress and the pregnant BM's ordered the "long" for an extra $20 but we will have them taken up to a tea length.  1) this will give us extra material if we need a filler patch in somewhere and 2) a tea length dress won't fit the same when you have a belly out front (the crowd might see more than they wanted!). The store did have a pillow for us to put under the dress but it was hard to judge because EVERYTHING gets bigger when you are pregnant.

  • I'm going to be a bridesmaid in my brother's wedding next weekend at around 30 weeks.  I was measured for my dress at around 16 weeks.  I hadn't 'popped' yet, so I got a dress that was floor length empire waist and flowed out.  I'm usually a 6/8, but got a size 12 at David's Bridal.

My mistake??  My RIB CAGE grew!  Because everything gets squished up there, it's expanded at least 2-3 inches.  I didn't order any extra fabric, but luckily I found some that matched the color of the dress at Joanne Fabric and my seamstress is trying to put a few extra panels in the back to expand the chest area.  So when you're thinking ahead, think about your rib cage as well.  Boobs can be squished or smashed-rib cages are SOLID. ;)

  • Thanks for posting about that!  I am nearly at 3rd tri (sorry, poaching the board, I know) and will be 35 weeks at my brother's wedding.  I did not even think about other parts of me that might be expanding!  I bet with the extra panels on the back it wouldn't make a different in pictures, hmm....something to keep in mind; thanks!

  • I was a maid of honor recently ( I was 24 weeks at the time). At the time my dress was ordered, it was ordered 2 sizes bigger since we had no way of knowing how big I'd be. I grew so much the dress almost didn't fit the day of the wedding! I never thought I'd have the growth spurt that I did.

Its really hard to predict how much you'll grow, so to stay on the safe side, order 2-3 sizes bigger. Its easier to alter a dress to make it smaller than it is to make it bigger.

Enjoy! You'll get lots of attention being the pregnant girl in the bridal party...I did! =)

  • It probably depends somewhat on whether or not this is your first pregnancy. With my first, I was MOH in a wedding at 24 weeks and didn't know hen ordering the dress. I was nervous, but didn't pop until after that so my dress fit fine. This time I'm in a wedding next week (at 29 weeks) and did know I was pregnant when ordering. The ladies in the store suggested ordering 3 sizes up nd although I thought they were crazy, I did it...and am glad. Two sizes up probably would have worked but I liked not having to stress and knowing there was room to work with. I did need $70 of alterations but it looks good and is comfortable. The dress is short, one strap/off shoulder too. A line or empire would've been better probably but it's not my wedding!
