Newly Pregnant - 5k question

So this is kind of a cross post - as I asked a little bit about it on my birth boards...

Here is my situation.  I was working out 3-5 times a week prior to getting pregnant.  But I only started couch to 5k 3 weeks ago.  Running is still very hard for me.  I am not a runner, but already signed up for a 5k in May.

I don't have an appt. with my Dr. until May 9th (Meet with the NP next week to confirm pregnancy.)  I don't know if I should stop running or not...

Anyone have any advice on continuing or stopping and just doing what I was doing (Spin, Elliptical, Strength Training...)

 TIA

Re: Newly Pregnant - 5k question

  • I totally agree. I was hoping to run this 5k at the beginning of May as well, but may just forego it because I know I won't feel up to it or be ready for it. Besides being newly pregnant, I've had foot cramps for such a long time. I wish you the best!

You should be fine, but you can always back off a bit if you're uncomfortable.  The general rule is that you should be able to continue what you're currently doing, but now is not the time to shoot for personal records.

So, keep going at your comfort level and make sure you're always able to hold a conversation (you shouldn't be gasping for air).  With the 5K, feel free to walk as needed, it's allowed!

Thank you!  That is good advice! :)

I agree with this.  Don't push yourself too hard right now. Just keep your normal routine.  Def still do your 5k!  baby's first race. :)  Walk most of it if you have to.  It will still be fun.

Thank you - and oh my goodness your DS's pictures are so cute!!

  • Keep training - HOWEVER, don't train like a knucklehead!!!  Listen to your body!!  If your body tells you to ease up, then do so...  If you walk part of your 5K you're fine.  Stay hydrated as well!

The week I found out I was expecting last year I did a personal best at Powerlifting Nationals.  I would have done better but was under doctor's orders that I couldn't strain.  Had I been allowed to, I'd have had a 20lb.+ higher total on the day...  I was able to lift until about the 28/30 week mark when some complications took me out, but up until then I was still going strong and lifting some impressive numbers..
