Natural Birth

Question for the natural moms

I want to have a home birth because well, it just seems better than being in a hospital. I would be considered high risk due to having Type 2 diabetes. Although I am not pregnant and don't plan to be for at least two years, I want to prepare myself with knowledge. I intend on getting to a healthy weight first but I know that that won't eliminate the diabetes.

If you are high risk, can you still have a home birth? I'm sure you can still have natural birth at the hospital but I'd rather be at home. I know this is WAY to early to be thinking about but my sister is PG and I have babies on the brain right now. Thanks!

Re: Question for the natural moms

  • This may vary by area and even from midwife to midwife, but where I live, you would be able to have a homebirth if you are not on insulin. Here, midwifery is highly regulated and homebirths with T1 diabetes, or T2 and gestational diabetes requiring insulin, are not within a midwife's scope of practice- she would lose her license if she attended a homebirth in that situation.

I disagree that it's too early to be planning. As you said, you want to get to a healthy weight and have your diabetes under better control before this, which would greatly increase your chances of having a homebirth. I say, never too early to start working towards that.

    Good luck!

  • Here, I don't think a birthing center would take you, let alone home birth. But, at least here, there are plenty of natural birth friendly hospitals. Some even push NB, but with an eye kept on it. Keep in mind, too, that with diabetes, other complications are common. Preeclampsia sneaks up on women, and would require a hospital birth. Your age also will play a factor. I'm 35, over weight, and I was (am) at risk for GD (passed!) and preeclampsia (still watching). Home birth would not have been an option for me.
  • It doesn't hurt to call some local MWs and ask. While they probably cannot tell you a 100% yes until you are their actual patient, if they all automatically say that no, they could not take you on, then you can start reading and mentally shifting gears to a NB in a hospital.
  • I'm not sure.  I know here, the birth center wouldn't be able to accept you.  The same midwives deliver at L&D so the care received there would be similar, but I know they can't deliver high risk patients at the Center because of liability/insurance issues, so I would think it would be very difficult, if not impossible to find a midwife that would deliver at your home if you're high risk.  I could be wrong though!  I do know someone who found a midwife willing to attend a homebirth VBAC.
