Hi ladies. I have posted here a few times because we've considered fostering for our family. This post actually doesn't have much to do with our personal situation (as we won't be pursuing adoption until my husband is done with school). I am hoping this is not a breach of etiquette--if it is, please feel free to let me know and I will happily remove this post.
I am in the process of doing research into the photography field as a possible career path for myself, and I am wondering if there would be a market for "day in the life" type photography for prospective adoptive parents to use for their profile. Do professional photos conveying who you are and what you do, sound like something that you would be interested in showing birth parents?
TIA! And again, if you are uncomfortable with me being here asking this, please let me know and I will take it down with no hard feelings.
[Poll]
Re: Hi ladies (profile related poll)
We were told to include photos of ourselves being active - such as playing sports, riding bikes, working outside (raking leaves, planting flowers), etc. We had to pick 5 pictures to include in our profile. I think most profiles tend to include more pictures than that, though. Our five ultimately included our cover photo, myself teaching art, us on our porch (not an active shot, but our caseworker really liked it), us feeding a giraffe at the zoo, and us picking pumpkins at a pumpkin patch/cider mill.
We used photos we had already taken and we took a couple more recent ones. We were encouraged to use more 'candid' shots and less posed shots (although the pic on the cover could be a posed portrait.)
Hope that helps! I am not sure if I would use a photographer to create my profile because the cost might be too high, but it might be something I would consider...good luck with your idea!
Thank you so much! My idea is more geared towards candid portraiture (ie, taking photos of the couple doing their hobbies, hanging out together, playing with their pets, etc). Obviously they would be staged, but more candid in nature. I am not looking to exclusively photograph prospective parents, but I wondered if that could be a service that I could offer in addition to my other areas of specialty.
I really appreciate everyone who has responded!
I think it's a great idea HOWEVER I'd like to see photographers interested in adoption and fostering (like you) to consider it as a charity or greatly reduce the cost. I know it's a photographer's business but I would not have justified the huge expense of a a Day in the Life sort of photography in the midst of the thousands we spend on adoption. Make sense??
Another idea would be normal price session for adoptive couples but then throw in a free newborn/new to family session once their child joins their family.
Most adoptive parents are very concious of the the costs of everything while saving for and planning for adoption
I agree with this, and would additionally comment that doing these sorts of shoots pro bono would be a great way to develop your portfolio and reputation when you are first starting out in the business.
I like that you are thinking of this as a help to those going through this process.
However, I composed our profile with pictures throughout the past few years, which included a variety of hair styles, etc. I kind of think if you do a "day in the life" profile, it might look like they don't normally do those things, they are just doing them for their book. JMO.
