Anyone else have a breech baby?

At my 37 week appointment on Weds, they told me they wanted to schedule the CALM shoulder screen and I might need a C-section. Then during my exam, the doc stopped, went out and wheeled in the portable ultrasound because she suspected the baby is breech. She was correct.

Now I have the shoulder screen ultrasound scheduled for Monday and have to weigh my options. If the risk for shoulder dystocia is high then the decision is made for me. But if it's low then I have to decide if I want them to try to turn her or just go ahead and schedule the C-section.

I know 3 people who have had unsuccessful versions and wound up with the C-section anyway. But figured that's not really a big sample of people. I'm nervous about doing the version because it could cause me to go into labor. My H works nights every other week and is the only one on duty next week, so going into labor then would suck. But there's no guarantee that I couldn't just go into labor anyway.

Anyone else been there? What did you do? For those who haven't been there, what would you do?

Re: Anyone else have a breech baby?

  • We thought for brief moments that both of my kiddos were breech. Luckily.u/s confirmed both times that they were head down. But, in that uncertain time between knowing for sure and thinking we were headed for c-section, I knew I would have to speak seriously with my ob about our options. I wanted a vaginal delivery, but the idea of the external version scared me too. I would have tried the chiropractor, accupuncture, etc first. But, had my doctor given me the go ahead on the version, I probably would have tried it. I would have asked to be induced after the procedure, if given the go ahead. But, in the end, a safe delivery is what matters. At any point had my doctor been insistant on a c/s I would have trusted her judgment and agreed.

  • Breech baby here, too.  I found out at 35 weeks, and she hasn't budged since.  I've been trying stuff from spinningbabies.com and seeing a webster chiro as well, but nothing's working.  Originally my doctor brought up doing a version, and I was set to try it, but after my last u/s where the baby was found to be measuring quite large they are no longer willing to try that.  So my decision has essentially been made for me if this stinker doesn't miraculously turn between now and April 25.  I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the prospect of a c/s myself, but I guess it is what it is.

  • I have a version scheduled Tuesday. I'll be one day shy of 37 weeks, and my dr. prefers to do them in weeks 36 or 37. She says the later they go, the less chance there is of success. Talk to your dr. about the odds of going into labor, and if you decide to go through with it, I'd suggest having a close friend on call for just in case you do end up going into labor.

I can't afford to choose seeing a chiro to turn him, and other methods haven't worked for me, so I chose the version, figuring a chance of C-section is better than a definite c-section.

There are things you can try at home, though. Some exercises on spinningbabies.com have been known to work. Also, lay with your pelvis tilted up, put a warm compress on the lower and a cool (not too cold, you don't want to cause damage) compress on the top of your abdomen. Hopefully, this will cause baby to move away from the cold and toward the warmth. My baby started to do this, but seemed to get stuck when he was almost sideways, but it might work for you.

  • I'm in the same boat, but just almost a week behind you.  Plus our baby is measuring small, so the doc is concerned that the stress on the baby would be higher than normal if we tried the version PLUS since he is small, he's quite mobile and can flip back.  We have an appt on Tuesday to re-check position.  I think if the doc is okay with it, I'd like to try the version.  If not, well then, an ultrasound it is.
  • I'm already almost 38 weeks so that is making me wonder if it's even possible to get her to move. I guess I will just see what the doctor has to say on Monday. I'll probably have a long list of questions for him by thenn.

Monicagail-My due date is also April 25th.

  • My baby has been breech all along. I've been seeing a chiro the whole pregnancy (which is supposed to help prevent breech), and she's been doing the Webster technique since I was 33 weeks. I've also tried doing inversions and playing music low on my pelvis, and the baby has not budged. My doctor's office mentioned doing a version to me, but did not recommend it. Based on the baby's position it is not likely to be successful, and there is a small risk to the baby. Frankly, I feel like if he was able to move, he would have by now. I think there must be a reason he has not moved, maybe the shape of my uterus is off since I have scoliosis, I don't know - but at this point I don't want to mess with it even if the risk to the baby is slight.

I have a c-section scheduled for a week from today.  Obviously I did not want a c-section, but now that I've had a few weeks to get used to the idea, I am okay with it. At least this way I was able to schedule it for a day which is convenient for my family, and in my case we'll be doing his bris a week after he's born so now we can plan ahead for it.
