placenta capsules

OK ladies, I expect there to be strong opinions on this topic. Be forewarned I am a little bit crunchy granola about these kinds of things but I am interested in your opinion...

Who is planning on taking placenta capsules after the birth?

Here is some information for those who are curious...

Re: placenta capsules

  • I found the information interesting, but, personally, before I would take anything, I would just want a little more hard evidence of the benefits.  I've never heard of placenta capsules before, but if you're doctor says they're okay, then why not!

  • I plan on doing it! I've heard great benefits and I found someone who makes the capsules, now I just need to ask my OB how easy it is to get my placenta released from the hospital. :)

  • Not me.  I worked in a hospital for a while doing cancer research and they use placentas and the proteins within to test with anticancer drugs.  I'd rather let the hospital keep mine and do that with it than eat it.

  • I'm not going to be taking mine... I'd also have to see some hard evidence first. I feel like animals do it as a housekeeping/nutrient recycling thing, and feel like I can get more of a benefit from continuing to take my prenatals... Also, It kind of grosses/weirds me out a little bit...

  • I won't be doing this, though I know someone who is.  It grosses me out, and the research doesn't seem to be conclusive.  It would make more sense to me to eat/take it raw than cooked/steamed - it loses a lot of nutrients in the process.

A question though - if you're really overdue (like 42 weeks) and it degrades, will you still encapsulate it?  What is your cutoff time?

  • I would so do this if my husband wouldn't disown me!  The first time I heard about a woman eating her placenta I thought it was the most disgusting thing I'd ever heard of, but after all the research I've seen, I could completely see having the capsules made.

Again, since DH would just die- both of the thought of this and of embarrassment (I've already used up all my points just convincing him of the benefits of a natural birth)- I won't this time, but kudos to you for considering it!

  • I'm probably not.  But fully support those who do this.  I might consider it if money were not an issue.  It just seems like one more thing for me to deal with, and I don't want to spend the money.

  • I'm surprised more people are not on the 'OMG that's nasty' train!  At least it's in a capsule, but still...no thank you.

This is where I am and I certainly won't be eating it raw.

TBH, it seems like a fad to me

  • I'm doing it and my doula is certified in encapsulation and will be preparing them in either my home or hers.  I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing a difference in the recovery process this time as I've always struggled with hormonal swings after birth.

  • I don't eat animal meat, I don't plan on eating my own. I just think there are better ways to get nutrients. I donate mine to the hospital for whatever they can use it for.

  • I'm absolutely doing it and I'm not ashamed to admit it.  If I have a hope of something helping me avoid PPD without having to go back on medications that will possibly endanger my plans to breastfeed then why wouldn't I do that?

I think people who get all icked out about it are pretty immature, honestly.  It's not like we're talking about eating it for dinner on a plate with some A-1 sauce.

Although that might be good too!
