I loved running 5ks before we found we were expecting. I definitely want to start up as soon as I'm cleared after baby's here! I've registered for the Baby Trend ELX Travel System, liking several of the features (iPod speakers, front wheel that can be fixed or freed, not having to wake baby to move from one thing to another etc). But, our sidewalks and areas around here aren't exactly smooth, and I want something good for baby without spending a TON of money! Anyone a runner that loves their jogging stroller when on their runs?
Re: ? about strollers for actual runners
You do get what you pay for in terms of jogging strollers. I wouldn't personally own the Baby Trend, but if that's all your budget allows for it will work. I would rather recommend you to look for a second hand Bob Revolution, sounds like your a light to moderate runner. If you were more into running, I'd look at their Ironman, the BJ High Performance, or the Chariot Cougar/CX.
And ditto, running before they have better neck control or able to sit on their own isn't recommended, even if you have them in the car seat attachment.
We have the Bob Revolution, and my parents found a Bob Ironman at a garage sale (after we bought ours of course) so we have run with both of these. They are amazing. They are comfortable rides for the baby and so smooth and easy to push. I prefer the Revolution because when walking or taking the stroller other places (dog park, lake, etc.) you need that pivoting wheel. These strollers do great on rugged terrain. With a fixed wheel just remember that any time you turn a corner you have to "pop a wheelie" which isn't a big problem, but depending on your running route it's something to consider. We also had a more traditional stroller with a smaller profile for the mall and outings like that.
I'll echo what others have said. Our pediatrician didn't recommend running until baby was 6 months old, but even that really depends on the baby and their muscle tone and head control. Some babies may be ready sooner than others. Personally, we weren't comfortable with it until she was closer to 8-10 months old. Before that she just looked a little floppy in the stroller. I wouldn't have wanted to run with a car seat adapter attached to the stroller either.
I would definitely look around for Bob strollers on Craigslist and second hand. They are such high quality that you could definitely find a great deal on a used model.
I just got my Bob Revolution. It was one of the must-have gear items for me. It consistently receives high ratings. I have many runner friends who are serious runners and they all swear by it.
I bought the revolution (option for either fixed or swivel front wheel) because I am hoping it'll suffice as our only stroller. We also got the car seat adapter for when LO is too young to hold his/her head up. I also won't take it off road before LO's neck is strong enough to support.
I honestly don't anticipate running more than 6 miles at a time with LO, mainly because of how long one can realistically expect a child to quietly sit in a confined stroller. Therefore I decided against the Ironman. That said, a couple friends picked up their ironmans at garage sales and love them. Though both commented on how nice it would have been to have a wheel that could be switched to swivel.
I run 2-5 miles several times a week through my neighborhood. The roads are flat and smooth for the most part. DS recently started riding in the main part of the stroller since the seat can recline. I use the snuzzler to give him some extra support, although he'd probably be fine without it. I did some short runs with him in the carseat snapped in. Since our roads are flat and smooth, it was actuallly a smoother ride in the stroller than in the car. As far as when to put baby in a jogger, that all depends on the features of the stroller, your baby, and the surface you run on. Since our jogger reclines, he can lay almost completely flat while I jog, although I usually put him up a little higher so he can look around.
I do have the baby trend and it works for me. My plan was to use the baby trend for the first and invest in a *better* jogger when I need a double. But the baby trend works fine for me and I have no complaints at all. You can't beat the price either.
