I just got back from going to visit family for 2 weeks on Tuesday. Well now my grandpa is on his death bed. He is unconscious now and hasn't eaten or drank anything since Thursday morning. He is at home with Hospice, and on Thursday they said it could just be a couple hours until he died, but right now he is still alive. Basically just breathing.
Well I saw him last week, and he met DD. Now DH and I have planned to drive up there in the morning (from NC to WI) with DD, and I was hoping that early next week would be his funeral as that is what I was hoping to be up there for.
He has kidney cancer, which he's had for about 4 years now, untreated. All he is on is morphine for pain.
We can postpone the trip until he actually dies, but my husband has already gotten leave approved and we would have to leave by Thursday morning.
What would you recommend? How long does a person in this condition usually last? All I can really tell you is about the cancer and that he's had trouble urinating so he had a catheter put in and they found blood clots in the way. The catheter is still in. Other than that they don't know how advanced the cancer has gotten or anything. My grandma died almost 6 years ago after 50 years of marriage and since he has been ready to go.
Re: Need advice... Nurses please come in
I'm sorry you are going through this, but I am glad you were able to get there with your baby to meet him. I'm sure that was very special for you all. My grandmother passed away from kidney cancer also, from the time she was unresponsive to when she died was 6 days. She lived for 19 days total on hospice. When they brought her to our house on hospice the doctor said 48-72 hours at the most....19 days later she passed away.
I would play it by ear an wait until you hear that he has passed away to head down for the funeral, because it could be 1 hour or it could be one week (highly unlikely, but you never know)
