Rookie Move?

Hi ladies!  So, I am almost ashamed to admit it, but I need your advice...at my pre-Lupron appt last Wednesday, my RE found two cysts.  I wasn't surprised b/c I had been having some discomfort a couple of days leading up to the appt.  So, my rookie move: in attempt to ease my discomfort...I used a heating pad directly on my belly for several evenings in a row.  Including the first two days of stims.  I went in for my first stimming u/s this morning and I got the all clear to continue since the cysts aren't producing estrogen, but it dawned on me that it was probably a very bad idea to use the heating pad on my developing follies.  Give it to me straight...did I screw up?  TIA.

Re: Rookie Move?

  • Hi RPL :) I think you might get different responses on this topic. My RE said that a heating pad during stims was fine. I'd even wear Thermacare pads to work on really bad days.

I haven't heard heating pads are contraindicated during the stim phase of IVF.  After ER and ET my RE recommends using a heating pad for abdominal pain.  They actually have a heating pad on my abdomen before I wake up from the sedation.

I think you are fine, but if you are super concerned I would call or email your RE and find out what he/she thinks

  • I know the golden rule of no heating pad after ET, but there does seem to be mixed thoughts on heat while stimming like AMCheri mentioned. What sparked my concern was when I asked my RE today about using a sauna tomorrow at the spa. He said no. That made me wonder about the heating pad, but I didn't think of it at that moment to ask him. I will play it safe and avoid elevating my core temp and just hope I didnt scramble my little eggies! :/

  • My rule was no heat while on Stims.  After er was done, but stop once transfer is done.  I'd just stop now.

This!  They gave me a heating pad to put on my belly right before my ER.

Also, after my BFN DH and I went to this spa and had a "hot cedar enzyme bath" where they cover you in these fabulous soft hot wood shavings.  (Sounds weird but it was wonderful.)   I did worry a little about it at the time but I just really needed an awesome relaxing mini-vacation and thought "screw it!"

It wasn't during stims, but it was super hot, and those were the same eggs that got me my BFP since I didn't have a real period between the BFN and ER.  Yes, they were suppressed on BCPs, but they didn't scramble under a lot more heat than what you're talking about.

So... don't worry too much.  I don't think you scrambled your eggs.  You might stop using it now just to be on the safe side, but I don't think a few times will hurt anything, especially early in the game.  And good luck!!!  I am rooting so hard for you, RPL!!

Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.

IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.

Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

  • As an aside, Ive practiced bikram (hot yoga) for years....and the direction is to stop while stimming.  Not bc it damages it eggs, but bc it can keep the meds from worki g as best as they can.  So I'd just stop now, ull be fine.

  • I think you will be fine if you stop using it now.  Given that there's no set rule, like there is post ET, you probably haven't done any damage to your follies.  You'll have more peace of mind though if you don't use it anymore.  And try not to worry ;)

    Good Luck!
