Moms of 2

My friend recently had DD #2 - I'm struggling to find the perfect congratulations gift. I didn't show up with anything at the hospital because I was hoping to find something personalized. I figured, she has more girl clothes than she knows what to do with so wanted to do something different.....any suggestions? Anything you got that was different and/or extremely useful for #2.

I'm also open to getting something matching for both girls......i looked into matching terry cover ups for the summer, personalized, etc.

Any thoughts

Re: Moms of 2

  • My nephew got a personalized blanket from Pottery Barn.  He LOVED that blanket.  He's 6 and I still think he sleeps with it.

I like the idea of some sort of matching summertime outfit- maybe something 3-6 months for the newborn and something in the appropriate size for older sister.  I'd also get older sister some sort of toy like item (small).  My aunt got my son some flashcards with colors/numbers/etc...  in other words an activity to keep him busy, and he loved it.

  • I wouldn't do the matching gift - get something for DD#2 that is all her own. A friend of mine made a blanket for DD#2 with her name on it which I thought was super sweet. You certainly don't have to make it, but buying something personalized (try Etsy) would be nice. Or order one of those picture frames that has the baby's name, birthdate, weight/length etc. Or ask the mom if she could use anything for the nursery if they decorated differently than with DD#1.

ETA: I'm not against getting the older sibling a gift - I think that I'd always a sweet gesture but I would do individual gifts.

  • Wow, those suggestions are a lot fancier than I'd go... I'd bring a meal to her house when you know she's having a bad day, or maybe a cute card that has a IOU: 6 free hour of babysitting.... something that'll help her sanity later on, y'know?

  • My two girls were born at opposite ends of winter, so we needed some outfits for spring/summer for DD2. Food is a great idea. So is a little "I'll watch your kids (or come play with the older one) so you can rest a bit."

  • Food!! From now on it's the only gift I'm giving new parents! This was the best thing I got this time round, because there's no time to even make a sandwich..! and then like PP said, maybe something personalized, because 2nd kids usually end up with a lot of hand-me-downs from the first child.
  • Before I even read the other replies I was thinking FOOD. We were incredibly grateful for all the meals that were brought to us after DS was born. Also, if you're going to do a babysitting voucher thingy, do it for the older child. In those first few weeks DD was driving me crazy and I would have loved to have someone entertain her for a few hours.

  • I agree with food. Best thing we recieved was a hot cooked meal and they stayed and entertained my toddler while we ate dinner peacefully.
