Cluster feeding

DD usually nurses a total of 25-35 minutes every 2.5-3 hours during the day. The last few days, she has started cluster feeding every 1-1.5 hours in the evening. These feedings are much shorter, about 15 minutes total. Are your LO's cluster feedings shorter? Should I try to keep her on the breast longer?

Re: Cluster feeding

  • I think there is only so much we can do to keep them on. Cluster feeding is very common and normal but frustrating for me!  I don't mind nursing her this much; I just wish she'd sleep in between a little and not just fuss!

  • I just finished a 2 hour marathon session.  Yes, it's normal, and I've just learned to set up my "home" in one small location... phone, tv remote, blanket, burpcloth, diapers, wipes, diaper pad, etc...  (she usually poops halfway through it).

You want to nurse through her feedings, let her direct you.  Remember BM production is all supply and demand, so if she's demanding, you need to be providing...  it will get better with time.  Oh, and there is supposed to be a growth spurt at 7-10 days.  I'm betting that's what is causing the clustering, and it should calm back down soon.  (until 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 4.5 months, 6 months, 7.5 months, 9 months, 12 months... the rest of the typical growth spurts)

  • My guy is cluster feeding right now and his feeding sessions are not shorter at all. I actualy would have expected them to be shorter. It's starting to get exhausting!
