3 hr gluclose test tom and im still sick.....please read

Ok ladies! I wrote a week ago about my 3 hour blood gluclose test. It was originally scheduled for last weekend but due to the fact I was beyond sick with a cold the Dr. told me its ok to wait for this week. Well this week I am STILL deathly sick and I don't know if I should go to take the test tom or just wait again. Im worried the meds and me being sick may alter my levels some kind of way. In that case I wouldnt want to take the test over and over. I failed the one hour by a few points only. I tried calling my OBGYN  and they are closed today due to it being good friday and I dont think I should speak with the Dr. on call about such a silly question........anyone had the same issue? any advice or help will be appreciated!! Ill be 29 weeks tom so I also dont know how much time I have to do this.

  • I took the 3 hour test when I wasn't feeling well, and I threw up the test.  Now I have to test my blood four times a day, which is a pain in the fanny.  My advice is to put off the test.  If you are sick, it will throw off your numbers (I learned this in my diabetes class I had to take, another fall out from throwing up the stuff).  And if you are sick you are more likely to throw up the glucose solution.  The glucose solution is so sweet it burns your throat.  Either way you end up with sore finger-tips!  Best of luck!

  • that was my thoughts! I don't want to waste time doing it for them to tell me I have GD when my levels could have been thrown off for being sick and on a tons of medication! If I take it at 30 weeks is that too late ? I dont know if we have a time frame to get this done. I feel so silly asking all these questions :(
  • I think you should speak with the doctor on call.  I feel like a pain whenever I call for something that I don't think is important, but it is their job, and they're used to it.  Besides, I think you're question is pretty valid!  Better be safe than sorry and have to repeat the test again.  Hope you feel better!
  • What meds are you on? If you are on a steroid that could definitely affect your glucose.

I suggest bringing a straw to drink the drink that way you don't have to really taste it.

  • It's not a silly question. I'd either call the on call OB, or I'd skip it and call on Monday. They will either have you reschedule or do home monitoring for a couple weeks. Just doing the test alone made me feel like death so I can't even imagine doing it when I'm already sick. If you can't finish the test they'll have you do home monitoring anyways so you're not really gaining anything by forcing yourself to go.

  • the only meds I am on is a cough syrup givin by the dr, sudefed 24 hour, and bendryl at night. I am also starting to feel dehydrated along with all my other issues. I just cant rid this stupid cold! Im available to go next weekend to do it and by then ill be 30 weeks I just dont want it to be too long and the Dr. be mad I waitied so long. I tend to stay in my head an overthink things so I dont know what to do in a situation like this! I can use the rest !
  • Being sick can affect your blood glucose by making it high. Also the medicines your taking can also affect you glucose. If you can't stop taking the meds during your fasting period, than you need to wait.
