Anyone having side effects from taking iron supplement?

I have been having very awful acid reflux and also (sorry for tmi) my stool is super dark.  I'm assuming this is all from taking the iron supplement.  I gave a quick call to my Ob just to see if there was a way around this but, they are closed due to the holiday.

Just wondering if anyone else is going through the same thing or has any tips?

Re: Anyone having side effects from taking iron supplement?

  • I was just prescribed an iron supplement with some other goodies in it as well - there is one of those warning stickers on the prescription bottle that says it may cause darkening of stool and urine. Also read side effects and one of them is heartburn they suggest not taking it at night if that happens because lying down will only aggrevate the heartburn. FYI also told it can cause constipation which many pregnant women already deal with and it warn to drink with a lot of water, not with dairy, cofee or tea since that hinders absorbtion of it into your body.

GL since I just took my first one this morning I am not sure yet what side effects I will get. Looking forward to it LOL

  • I really doubt the acid reflux is due to the iron, but the dark stool is definitely because of the iron.  Have you tried taking it with Vitamin C?  That will help it absorb.  Also, if you are taking it with other supplements make sure there is no calcium.  Calcium will block iron absorption.

     Good luck!

  • Thank you so much, I bought the generic over the counter brand which didn't list any of that so thank you!!:)

Doc told me the same thing.  Add some Vitamin C with your iron supplements and the stool issue will improve.

I have to take iron supplements too but I've only been on them for a week. I was warned they may turn my stool really dark but I haven't noticed it yet. I also have the really bad acid reflux, but that's nothing new for me! I have heard taking the iron with juice or something containing vitamin C can help, but now that I have GD, that's not an option for me Sad
There are chewable vit C tabs you can buy so you don't have to drink juice!

  • What kind of iron supplement are you on?  I am taking the supplement "Slow FE" and found that it seems to have less side effects than a typical iron supplement.  It's a bit more expensive, but I have not had any constipation at all or anything.
