My last one I got to have ice chips in the recovery room and jello the next day. But that was almost 10 years ago. Just wondering if anything has changed? lol
I think it varies by hospital. They would only let me have fluids for a day and a half after mine, but my friend (an L+D/maternity nurse) said that at her hospital they only make you wait until they can hear gas passing in your intestines, which she says often only takes a few hours.
Nope it didn't change. I had my section 3/6/12 and they gave me water and lots of ice chips. They allowed me some broth and jello and that's it. I was able to order food the 2nd day.

I had an afternoon c/s. I was given ice chips right after in recovery. I got to order from the "liquid diet" portion of the menu for dinner. Since that went down well, my night shift nurse gave me toast and crackers. The next morning I could order whatever I wanted for breakfast.
LOL..I am only 7 weeks pregnant, and your post actually made me gag remmebering what they made me eat after my first c-section 8 years ago. It was some horrid cream of mushroom soup.I think they made me stay on a liquid diet for at least 2 days with that one. UGHG...I was STARVING! (My csection was late in the evening, so this was the next day.) I planned ahead with the 2nd one telling my dr. to PLEASE not put me on a liquid diet. He agreed and I was able to eat a light dinner that night. With my last one, I sent dH out for dinner that night. I think it is just what you are able to tolerate. You sure don't want it coming back up...

I was only allowed liquids until I could pass gas. On day 2 I was so hungry I lied that I could... nothing bad happened when I ate real food. My SIL was allowed to eat right away after hers in a nearby hospital
I had mine at 614 at night. I had to fight to get ice chips right after/during recovery. I got chicken broth for breakfast and lunch the next day - it wasnt till dinner that they served me real food.
I was completely knocked out for my c-section (around 9 PM) so it took me a while to recover but I was offered jello around 1 AM and then I ordered breakfast around 7AM.

Grace was born at 745am. I forget what time I got back to my room but the hospital was still serving breakfast. I got breakfast b/c I was starving! Ate that and within about 10 minutes probably, I threw it up. Lunch time, same thing....was starving, ate, and then threw it up. Once the food was out of me, I felt perfectly fine. So to answer your question, I ate almost immediately w/in a few hours but didn't keep anything down till dinner.

DD was delivered just before midnight. I was restricted to liquids at breakfast (the cherry italian ice I ate was the best thing I've ever tasted), but at lunch (12 hours post-op), I was cleared to have whatever. I have no idea if it had anything to do with gas. I was too high on morphine to remember the little things. Except italian ice, of course.
I had DD at 6PM, and ate real food that night before going to bed. They really wanted me to eat, it was a turkey sandwich and some other stuff I can't remember. Then I had breakfast the next morning.
Goop LOL like jello, broth, mushy stuff. But that was just the day of/after the c/s. Then I had grilled chicken and green beans YUM our hospital actually has good food!
Shortly after I got into my room they had a liquids tray sent to me. It included Jell-o, apple juice, chicken broth, popsicles and one other thing (can't remember). I had a grilled cheese and tomato soup later that day (I delivered at 6:36 am) and then a full dinner that night. I think I would have gone crazy only having fluids until I could pass gas since that didn't happen until a couple of days after surgery.

Re: When can you eat after c/s?
With my first when I delivered via c-section 2 yrs ago, they told me I could only had soup and jello until I could pass gas on my own.
