Ear piercing

When are you thinking you'll get your little girl's ears pierced?

I can see the pros and cons of doing it now and of waiting.  If we do it now she won't remember the pain and she'll leave them alone while they heal.  However, if we do it now there's the slight chance that an earring may get caught on clothing as I'm getting her dressed and undressed and she doesn't have a say in wether or not she wants it done.  If we wait then it can be something she can look forward to doing and can be a special "big girl" thing, however, she'll remember the pain and will most likely keep touching them as they heal, possibly leading to infection.

I know she'll most likely want them done at some time since my right ear is pierced twice and my left is pierced 7 times.  My mom and sisters all have their ears pierced or double pierced and even my dad has his ear pierced.

Re: Ear piercing

  • Wait.

Babies ears grow and there is a very good chance that the piercings won't be symmetrical when she gets older. Also, (and I'll likely get flamed) I think pierced ears on babies is terribly tacky.

  • I had mine done when I was 5.  I like the idea of 5 but on the other hand I think it depends on your child's maturity level.  On the down side, because I had mine done so young they are really high on my lobe.  They look dumb unless I have hoops in.

  • DD won't get her ears pierced until she is old enough to ask for it and understand how to/help take care of them.

  • I don't have a girl, but if I did, I would get her ears pierced now.  The reason I say this is because I remember getting mine done at like age 8 and I was TERRIFIED.  One got infected because I was so scared for my mom to touch them to clean them because it hurt.  My sister had my niece's ears done early and they were fine.

  • IMO, body modifications shouldn't happen until the child chooses to have them done. Both my girls asked to have them done around 4. When ever Scar wants them done I'll take her.
  • We are waiting until she asks, and I think we will make her save up her money to pay for it herself. I have seen some adults who have off centered piercings because they had them done as babies.

I like this answer.  Body modifications in general will be paid for by the child asking for it and certain body modifications (tattoos/gauges/multiple piercings/etc) will not be allowed until they are paying their bills and are no longer dependent on us supporting their lifestyle.

I believe I had my ears pierced as a 10 year old.  Yes, I do remember the pain from the piercing and I do remember how hard it was to keep them clean (I had help from my dad).  But I don't regret it.  I do, however, think that 10 was too young as my dad had to help me keep them clean.  I think had I been 14 or 16, it wouldn't have been so difficult. I also would not have my daughter's ears pierced with a gun.

Luckily, I don't have to worry about this since LO is a boy--at least not until the next child.

  • I agree that babies with ear piercings are tacky. I just can't help but think the parents don't feel their baby is "girly" enough without them. (Minus the cultural reasoning for those that do it.) Let your baby choose if they want it...

My mom made me wait until I was 13 and I was fine with that. Then I could take care of them and I understood what I was doing to my body.

  • I just pierced my daughter's. My parents waited until I asked, which was age 6. I touched them so much and wouldn't let my mom clean them and they got horribly infected (we're talking bloody blisters on my ear lobes). It wasn't a cultural thing for us.

I have a ds but if I had a dd I would probably get her ears pierced now. I had mine done when I was an infant and they are symmetrical and I never had any issues. All the little girls in my family have had it done as infants as well so for us it's no big deal.

  • We're piercing at her 3 month appointment - we did the same for DD1. We did it because I love earrings on little girls and I wanted them both to be young enough not to be afraid, not to touch them and to let me clean them without giving me a hard time.  I think people who think earrings on little girls are tacky are living on a high horse. It's earrings. It's not a tattoo. It's hardly a "body modification," but to each their own.

this, and I had mine done when I was older--I don't remember it hurting so that would not sway my decision.

Agree. My lo has a full head of hair and I accessorize her with baby bows. She really doesn't need earrings to look cute.
