If you had long hair & chopped it off

Do you like the shorter style better?

I have long hair, always have. Its down to the middle of my back. I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow and I'm planning on chopping it off to shoulder length, or to the point where if I curl it it won't be more than an inch off my shoulders (I have a Reese picture that I'm taking in)

I'm thinking I'll either love it because I'll be able to style it faster and won't need hair ties. Or I'm going to be pissed because styling will take as long and I won't be able to use hair ties lol. Either way I'm doing it but I'm curious how you guys felt when you did it.

Re: If you had long hair & chopped it off

  • Right before I had LO I chopped off 14 inches to donate to the Pantene program.  I had chin length hair.  I didn't mind it and just let it air dry most of the time.  I prefer having shoulder length hair though because I have the option to pull it back in a ponytail which I do about 75% of the time.  The only time I "style" my hair is when I straighten it.

  • I have a terrible habit of growing my hair for years, then keeping it short to super-short (1" shag) for a few years, and flip-flopping back and forth. I love short styles because they tend to help me look younger, are more versatile, and look "done up" easier. I like that they remove the hair tie as an option and force me to do something with my hair and look nice. I dislike short styles on days that I am running late, don't have time to do my hair, and just want a ponytail.

Do it! If you go shoulder length, you should still be able to do a ponytail in an emergency. If you don't love it, growing it out shouldn't take too long. GL!

I've cut my hair to right above shoulder length 4 or 5 times since I was 16 (I'm 29).  I always immediately regret it and grow it out.  I am just more comfortable with long  hair.  I love short hair but not on me.
  • I also tend to grow mine out but chop it every 12-18mo.  If this is your first time getting short hair, keep the ponytail option.  Seriously, I'd go nutzo if I couldn't pull my hair back.  Sometimes I'm just too damn lazy to give a fart about styling.  Also, if I cut it too short, it is more of a PITA to style than if I didn't.  I hate when I get all excited and go too short.

  • I took 14" off my hair in January and went to a just past shoulder length bob and I LOVE it. I had my long hair pulled back all the time and to blow dry/ style it took forever. This is so much better for me. I did intentionally leave it long enough for an emergency ponytail.

  • I have very thick, curly hair.  I have had long hair much of my life... but when I cut it to shoulder length it is much more manageable.  I can still use the pony tail or messy bun option... but I can wear it down without a ton of work or product.  On the other hand, when I chopped it bob length... I hated it... I had a picture I was going for and it totally did not work with my hair.  It looked terrible.... and I grew it out again.

  • I had hair down to my butt and cut it off to right above my shoulders. I didn't miss it, and my shorter was so much easier to deal with and I could straighten it in 5 seconds. I'm actually going to cut it all off again sometime this soon.

  • Just remember that hair grows back, plus it takes a few days to get used to styling it.  So you may hate it at first, but after a few days you'll get used to it, and if you really don't like it, you can always grow it out again.

I'm completely opposite.  I hate having long hair.  I try and keep my hair a little below chin length or above.  I grew my hair out for my wedding and made an appointment the day after to chop it off.  I was so glad to get rid of it.

  • I have had long hair and short hair (pixie)

I hate middle length/shoulder length hair. I always wear it up if it is in that in between stage.

As a new mom I had long hair. I found that I wore it up every single day for the first 6 months of LO's life. So I chopped it and have a pixie now. I love it because I can look "nice" without doing much, and I only have to wash it every 3-4 days. I am not going to be growing it out for a long time. I just looked blah with the pony tail all the time.

You have to find a really good stylist though - and it does take a while for your hair to adjust when you first cut it, like PP said.

  • I've always worn my hair pretty long, just past my bra strap.  A few months ago I cut it shoulder length, very choppy with a long bang.  I love how it looks. I am still able to pull most of it back with an elastic, just the long bang annoys the crap out of me when I am home and want to be comfortable because its too short to stay in the ponytail. I usually wind up putting one of my DD's little bow clips on top of my head to pin them back.
  • I like my longer hair. Everyone else likes my hair short.

  • Every time I cut my long hair I end up regretting it. Long hair is easier for me. Short hair has to be styled to look good on me. I have very thick, wavy hair and it is just so much harder to have shorter hair. If I can't put in back in a pony tail, it's too short.

I do switch up my bangs a lot, and that helps me feel like it has some style to it even if it's pulled back.

  • I prefer my hair short, and really need to go back to it. I just hate paying to get it but every 6ish weeks - it's so freaking expensive here.

My hair is really thin, and naturally curly. When it gets too long it just looks really flat and..not good. It's shoulder length right now, which is better, but I was just looking at pics from when I had short hair (I did in college, and then post-wedding I cut 10" off) and I like it much better short.

  • If it's still long enough to tie up, go for it!  I love my hair in a short bob, but it takes longer to style because I have to style it or it doesn't look as good...and it's usually too short to put up at the length I like.  So i've just been leaving it longer for the past few years...but I would love to cut it short again.

  • I've had long hair to my bra strap, pixie cuts, and basically everything in between. I prefer my hair either in a short, stacked bob or just at my shoulders, because my curl pattern looks best at those lengths.

Last time I cut my hair off from very long to pixie cut it took me a few days to get used to it, but I loved it. I just couldn't keep up with the maintenance. It's much easier at shoulder length or so.

FWIW, I can't put my hair in a ponytail anyway. It's so thick and heavy that as soon as I pull it back, I get a tremendous headache.
