ugh! coworker vent

I'm currently 31 weeks, and I work with a woman who will only refer to my baby as a fetus.  She's even gone as far as to correct me when I say "my baby!"  I've considered him a baby throughout the pregnancy, but at 31 weeks, he's developed and can survive and live a healthy life if he was born today.  I don't know what this woman's deal is.  Some people are just insensitive I guess!

  • or uneducated.

Maybe she really wants to be pregnant and this is her way of distancing herself fromt he emotional aspect...you never know...I jsut found out a family member has been trying to get pregnant for over a year with no luck...so you never really know what is going on in someone's head!

  • Oh I so wouldn't talk to her about anything that wasn't work related and I would tell her to keep that talk to herself, dingbat.  I told a guy yesterday who referred to their child (his wife is around 34wks) as "it."  I told him that the baby is not an and to figure out something else to call him/her since they are team green, even if it's just "the baby."

  • I definitely thought that maybe she was being insensitive because of personal experience, but she's clearly stated that she nor her partner have any desire to become pregnant or adopt.  I hate to assume, but I think she just is trying to be super politically correct and doesn't care if she's alienating or, ironically, offending someone in doing so!  My hormones have definitely minimized my filters and shortened my fuse.  It's really hard to keep my mouth shut, but I'm not going to jeopardize my job or rock the boat in any way.  VERY frustrating!  Thanks for the insight!
  • Even if she is dealing with her own issues, it is still obnoxious of her to correct you like that. I would be pissed if someone called my baby a fetus. Just say baby. What's the big deal?

Also I would avoid talking about your pregnancy with this woman. Just stick to work related stuff.

  • That would annoy me, and I would have a really hard time not being rude to her, especially since you're so far along.

I will say that my dad (I'll put it out there that he's a scientist) referred to our LO for the first 2 trimesters as a "fetus", but now that I'm in the 3rd tri he's starting referring to her as "baby." I think that the terminology for him (someone that comes across as tough but is a big teddy bear) was not only a scientific thing but a way he could protect himself from getting too attached/hurt (I lost a child previously) until he was sure we were past the viability point.

It could be that this woman has experienced something similar, though I don't agree with her correcting you!

  • While "fetus" is kind of creepy, DH and I call the baby "it" to some extent because we don't know if it's a boy or girl.
