Q for moms adding formula to breast milk

I will also post this on 0-3 mo. board.

I am going to start adding an oz of formula to my bm.  I am pretty sure my LO is ready to up her intake and I am not consistently pumping enough bm to do that.  Also, I am going to start weening her off of bm in the next few wks, so I thought this would be a good start.

Anyway, how are you managing the formula and bm?  I pump after my LO eats so a bottle is ready for the next feeding and I keep it at room temp.  But now that I have to add the formula I am thinking I will have to have the formula pre-mixed in the fridge, add it to the bm, and then heat the bottle.  That seems a little complicated.  Is there an easier way?  TIA.

  • Thats pretty much how we do it, only one, it depends on how you heat it up (microwaving breast milk is a no-no, as it destroys the nutrients) and two, as far as I'm aware, you're not supposed to leave breast milk at room temp any longer than an hour, or it goes bad.

  • My ped told me that 6 hours is the limit for room temp (72 degrees or less) breast milk. I put the pumped milk in the fridge and have premixed formula in the fridge.  Then I just combine some of each and put the bottle in a mug of hot water to warm it up.  Formula is good  in the fridge (premixed) for 24 hours.  I normally only make 4 oz at a time just in case I have a lot of pumped milk that day.  My supply is still just a little less than what he needs.  If you are unsure of the milk, just smell it.  You will know if it is spoiled.

Thanks :-)  Just FYI- according to kellymom.com and the book that came with my Medela pump, bm can stay in room temp for 4-6 hrs.  Kellymom says that if the house is cool (68-72 degrees), which mine is it can actually stay out for 10 hrs.  I keep it out bc my LO eats every 3 hrs.  It actually works out really well.  Not anymore I guess :-(

  • An easier way is to use tap water at the appropriate temperature to mix the formula at the time that you feed her, and then pour it into the bottle that you use with the bm in it.
