Preschool Field Trips

Does your preschool take them? Do parents have to be there? Does the preschool provide transportation if needed?

DS1's preschool takes a few. Recently they went to the library which is within walking distance from the school so they went during class and parents did not have to be there. The rest of the field trips are also in place of class time (classes are AM or PM so trips are only a few hours). However, they are not within walking distance so the children are to meet at the location instead of at the school. A parent or other chaperone must be present for the child to attend however no siblings are allowed.

DS1 was supposed to go on the upcoming field trip. However, I just found out that DH's work schedule chanced and we can not find a sitter. I feel bad for DS1 because he was looking forward to going but am planning on calling the other parents with younger siblings to see if they want to have a play date if they weren't able to go as well.

Re: Preschool Field Trips

  • Our preschool does one field trip a month. A few parents are requested to be chaperones (just a few for the class), siblings are welcome. Transportation is provided but if you're chaperoning, you may bring your child separately.

  • Our daycare based preschool only has in house field trips (places come to school and do special events) and they have a bus rule that you need to be 5 ride the bus - they do a great school age program and they do field trips on school release days and over the summer.  The PreK which is at the elementary and is for kids starting kindergarten the next year does field trips.  This is a full day, full time program and all trips are during school hours, transporation is via a bus and everything is included in the cost of my annual tutition.  If parents are needed, they ask people to volunteer and typically the parents meet the bus at the location of the trip as space on the bus is limited.  The program has 3 locations with around 70 kids plus the teachers (2-3 depending on the site).  The field trips are wonderful and the kids love them - my DD was 4 and a few months when she started the program and I would not have been comfy with her going someplace like these trips without me if she had been any younger.

DS's class has gone on 3 field trips and they rode the school bus.   2 trips were local and during class time(fire house and a train display in town at Christmas time)   They also went to the pumpkin farm.    They had several parents as chaperones.    This was an all day trip(left at 9:30 and back at 2) so the AM and PM classes went together.

Maybe  when you call the classmates to set up a playdate, one of them will offer to take your younger one instead?

Anything with walking distance has been optional for parents. The kids are going to walk to the fire house in a couple of weeks and I am going to go too! I try to bring my youngest as well to any field trips. If for some reason I could not make it they would provide transportation. Sorry I did not see the part about siblings not invited. That would be a deal breaker for me with a preschool. Another option would be to see if your child could tag along with another parent and you watch the younger siblings? Even at kindergarten my my two younger sons are welcome to join for any festivities.

  • Starting with the 3 year old program they have field trips every month.  Since it's also a daycare, parents are not expected to attend, but can if they want.  They travel on a bus.  Some of the trips, in my opinion, are a little far for that age.
  • DD's school does do an annual field trip.  It's typically in May (right around the middle of the month) and parents do not have to be present in order for the children to attend; although, most parents make the effort to go with their child. Transportation can be provided if need be.

  • My DD goes to a preschool/daycare.  They have 2 off-site field trips a year.  Parents are required to attend and they do not provide transportation.  Everyone meets at the location.  They do have teachers that will stay at the school for any students/parents that can't go.

  • When DS moves to the preschool room, he will do one field trip a week.  They do provide transportation.  His preschool is part of a daycare center.

  • Our son goes to preschool, actually this is his last year, and he has two teachers.  They go on field trips on a school bus and parents can chaperon if they want, but they don't have to go. The preschool is part of a real school (he goes to a catholic school).  There are always parents that go on the field trips, so it's not a big deal if I can't go.

  • DD has about one field trip a month.  Her first field trip was to a location around the corner, so they walked to that one.  For all the other field trips, they've taken buses.  We do have to pay extra for the bus transportation, usually it's about $15.  Parents sign up to chaperone field trips, on field trips they require one adult for every two kids.

ETA:  Chaperones can not bring siblings and only the 4 year old classes go on field trips.  DS (3) goes to the same school and his class does not go on field trips.
