Glucose test was High, should I be worried?

Hey mamas!

I have had such a wonderful pregnancy so far. Absolutely nothing to worry or complain about, But my midwives just called and said my glucose test was high and now I have to go in for the 3 hour test. anyone else have to do this? Did anyone else have the 3 hour test come back negative and be fine?!?! Also If any mamas out there with GD? I have no idea what it means or what it will mean for my baby and that worries me! Im 29 weeks now and will have the 3 hr test next week. Thanks for listening, this is the first real thing I have had to worry about!!

Re: Glucose test was High, should I be worried?

  • Try not to be worried, they should always do the 'long test' if your GT is positive.
Just because the GT is positive, does not always mean you have Gestational Diabetes. Its just the next step..

Try to be patient, eat smart, and hopefully they rule it out.

  • I failed my 1 hr and even though I tecnically passed my 3 hr since my numbers were so borderline, my dco is having me go to diabetic nutritional counceling and test 4 times a day for a week and then 2 times a day for a week and then she will review my numbers and we can discuss my situation then.

Today as my first day of testing and tomorrow I go for counceling.

I think my numbers have been pretty good today (not 100% sure), so i think it wasn just my body not liking that nasty drink (I almost puked, but didn't as I didn't want to have to do it again).

I am not overly worried since my weight has stabilized and I am measuring right on track and feel pretty good now that I am on an iron supp.

The real risk is more to your baby than you. He could end up large which could obviosly affect your delivery, but it could also cause him to have a sever dip in blood sugar at birth, so they do the testing to see if you need to watch that so, that he is table after birth.

Hope that helps. I wouldn't worry to much only about 2-5% of women don't pass the 3 hr.

  • My 1 hour was pretty high.  I thought I was in trouble for sure.

But, I passed the 3 hour no problem.

  • I failed the 1 hr by 11 pts and passed the 3 hr.  Make sure you get the directions for fasting for the 3 hr since different docs do that differently.

  • my 1 hour glucose came back really high and i was super worried about it, but then I did the 3 hour and passed just fine.  Try to relax and not get to worried because they say stress can cause your glucose levels to go up.

And like some of the other ladies said make sure to get the directions from your Dr about how long they want you to fast and such because each does it a little different.

  • haha... i could have written this post exactly !  im curious about responses too

  • I failed my 1 hr pretty bad and got sent straight to the class.. the diet is not that bad and honestly I am putting better things into my body than I was before so It will probally make it easier to drop the weight after. It really is just like a modified atkins in a way. So do not panic it is really not that bad my sugars have all been fine since.

  • I have GD and I had it with DD also.  With DD the diet worked just fine for my sugars and she was born at 6lbs 8oz, however she was born with low blood sugar and was in the NICU for a few days.  She is completely fine now.

With this pregnancy the diet is not working so they have put me on medication to help keep my numbers low.  I haven't started taking them yet though. Waiting for the 'script to be filled.

Don't worry even if you do have GD as long as you follow the diet and follow the doctor's directions everything will be fine.
