How helpful are FFNs?

Just found out that yesterday's FFN test was negative, which is exciting ... but I'm wondering how common it is to have a negative FFN and still go into PTL in the next two weeks. Has that happened to any of you?

Re: How helpful are FFNs?

  • I went to L&D at 32 weeks for contractions and also had a negative FFN.  I was induced at 38 weeks and ended with a c/s because I didn't dialate past a 3.

  • My OB said that a positive FFN doesn't mean much, but that a negative FFN means that you have less than 1% chance of preterm labor in the next two weeks.  That doesn't mean that you couldn't deliver for some other reason (like water breaking) in the next two weeks, but less than 1% chance of preterm labor is pretty good.

I had a negative FFN at 32 weeks when I was in suspected preterm labor.  I didn't deliver until 38 weeks.

  • I really don't have much faith in those tests. I had a negative FFN the day I delivered, and I was in full-blown PTL.

I've heard there's a more accurate test out there that looks at something in your saliva. You may want to ask your OB about it.

  • Cands, it's good to know an actual statistic. My OBs had said a positive FFN meant a 1 in 6 chance of PTL in the next two weeks, but I realized I didn't know the odds with a negative FFN.

  • And Mrs. Destructo--wow, that's crazy! I guess you were in the 1%, eh? If I were you I wouldn't have much faith in it either!

  • Yeah, I guess I am in that 1%. I have since heard that how the swab is done can impact the accuracy of the test. So maybe the nurse didn't do the swab properly? Who knows.
  • Interesting!
The OB herself did mine yesterday so I'm hoping it was done right.
