painful braxton hick?

I was at the grocery store buying some cat food (so nothing heavy or arduous) and I started feeling a BH coming on.  It was a slow, creeping tightness that started in my back and spread across my belly.  I am used to that sensation, so I didn't think much of it.  Then all of a sudden the tightening turned into a cramping sensation like nothing I have ever felt before (not super super painful, but not like menstral cramps or gas pains or "I have to poop" cramps).  The cramp was completely in my belly, from my groin all the way to the top of my uterus.   It didn't make me feel like I had to go to the bathroom, and I am not constipated, so it wasn't like that.  It didn't really effect any part of me but my belly.  I actually stopped me in my tracks, and I stood there frozen with my hand on my belly while it lasted, which was only about 10-15 seconds.  That was 40 minutes ago, and I feel weird, but I don't know if I am talking myself into feeling weird, if you know what I mean.  I've never had a BH go past vaguely uncomfortable into uncomfortable/painful before.  Owen is moving around a lot now, but he feels lower down, almost like he is in my groin (usually I feel him right above and at my bellybutton).

Has anyone had this sensation before?  It wasn't a sharp, quick pain like when Owen kicks a nerve, or a sharp, achey pain like round ligament pain, at least, I don't think so..... I am all alone tonight and I don't want to alarm anyone...... thanks for your input!

  • My doctor said as long as there are no more than four in an hour, you should be okay.  If you are worried about it (or if there are more) then go into L&D to ease your mind.

  • I was complaining to my OB at my appointment 2 weeks ago about having cramping feelings that I don't think are BH.  He said to try to lay down for an hour or two and see if the feeling goes away.  He also said to make sure I'm drinking plenty of water.  Sometimes the cramping is dehydration.  I went in for another appointment today and explained that i've been having the same cramping, slightly painful feelings.  They hooked me up to the machine to make sure they weren't contractions.  Thankfully, it wasn't.  Frustratingly, no one could explain why I'm feeling this way other than that I am a teacher and on my feet most of the day.  It's my understanding that having just 1 or 2 feelings like this is fine and normal.  My OB said that if I feel 6 in an hour, then I should call.

Since you're home alone, try just laying down, relaxing, and making sure you're drinking plenty of water.
