What size bike for 39" tall kid?

I'm going to try to find DS a small bike on craigslist but want to weed out the ones that are the wrong size. There isn't much listed that isn't pink (just yet, I hope), but what I have seen is 12". Would this be appropriate or would he be better off with 16"?

Re: What size bike for 39" tall kid?

  • Kids who are the same height can have very different inseams. I would take him to a store to try different sizes to be sure of fit.
Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • DS is taller, and we still went with 12".  The 16" are really high IMO.

  • I would try it out in stores and see how they fit. DD1 is now 41.5 inches tall and her 12" bike is too small for her... I mean, she can still ride it, but you can tell it's too small. What about a 14" bike? I wish we'd gone w/ that size for DD1 when we bought it for her last summer.

  • You really need to have your child try a bike to know the right size.  Kids can have height in the legs or the torso and that will make a huge difference.  Off hand, I would aim for a 16inch but you won't know for sure unless you try.  Any bike store or TRU should have them out and you can have your child try a few different sizes.  We just got my girls new bikes and both got 16 inch - DD#1 is around 42 inches and DD #2 is 39 inches (or close to 40, I can't recall off hand) and the box that their bikes came lists the size as 37 to 46 inches which is a huge range.

  • DS is 40.5 inches tall and has a 16in trike. My dad put wood blocks on the pedals and he still struggles. DS is all torso and has short legs so that is his issue.

  • DD is 40" and we just got her a 16" bike with training wheels.  We took her to a local bike shop and had her fitted for it and she can pedal it no problem.  It's just on the verge of being too big, but it's got a smaller frame so she can stand over it, get on and off easily and pedal easily.  She would have outgrown the 12" far too quickly.
