anyone out there a personal trainer? do you make a set salary or work as an independent contractor? what certification courses would you suggest? thanks
To bad no one answered, I would have loved to have some info on this also. I live in Albuquerque and I called one of the community college and they wanted to charge me 30,000 for there course it involves alot of things about the body. But I think it is definitly to expensive. good luck!
I am a personal trainer although I quit that job and got a faculty position at a community college. When I did personal training, I worked in a large gym. There were many other trainers and when new clients signed up, we were randomly assigned to them via a rotation. We would contact them for 2 free sessions; one a consultation and measurements and the second for an actual workout. It was then up to us to sell them training packages.
This is how most gyms work, although some smaller ones will just give you clients.
The problem with this is that it becomes a sales job, and I was not a "salesy" person. The other problem is that although the client may be paying $80 per hour, I would only get $20-25 of that.
You can work out of your home or travel to other people's homes, you would just need to invest in some good equipment. The going rate in my area is between $55-100 per hour depending on the trainer's expertise and experience. One thing I am not sure about if you do this is insurance. Unfortunately, people get hurt working out and this is a sue happy society...
Some of the highly respected certifications out there are NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) and ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine). When I was becoming certified, I contacted local gyms and asked them which certifications they would prefer their employees to obtain. You can sign up for workshops to prepare you for the exams and they usually cost between $200-500, last 3 full days and include the text books and practice exams.
Hope this was helpul! It has been a while since I became certified, but I believe this information is up to date. Good Luck!
