recovery questions (tmi)

Hope it's okay that I'm posting this on this board.. I lurk here most often =)

It'll be 6 weeks on Friday since LO arrived and I'm done bleeding and don't really have any vaginal soreness anymore, so that's nice.

But my vagina ITCHES like crazy!! Its my entire vagina and my upper thighs and it's horrible! I'm currently slathering on Vagisil and calamine lotion (for my thighs) pretty much every time I use the washroom, is there anything else I could/should be doing? I wake up to baby in the middle of the night and have to go to the bathroom to get the lotions before I bf or I can't stand it.

Also, what's the scoop on hemorrhoids? My nurse after delivery said that once you've got them they never go away. So is having a bm going to be this miserable for the rest of my life? I've been taking stool softener twice a day and I still bleed with every poop and then am sore for most of a day afterward (which wasn't so bad when I was pooping every 3 days or so but now I'm back to pooping just about every day). The Dr. asked if I wanted prescription strength hemorrhoid cream and I said yes, and then it turned out he actually prescribed capsules that I have to insert anally twice a day and after every poop (and they're spendy). I'm not so happy about that. Anything anyone else does for hemorrhoids?

Re: recovery questions (tmi)

  • I don't remember the vaginal itching, have you talked to your dr about that? It might just be part of the healing.

As far as hemorrhoids I think it might have been 2 months before they cleared up. I just used stool softener to make the bm's easier on myself, and tucks pads and prep h.

As for the nurses comment, that's weird seeing mine went away, I guess everyone is different!

Hope things get better for you soon and congrats on the lil squish!!

  • I've had hemorrhoids since college which was roughly 8 years ago.  I got them because of high stress with tests.  After graduating they went away and returned when I was stressed with my wedding.  That was when they were the worst.  Again they reappeared because of the bearing (sp?) down with DD, but cleared up soon after.

I believe they don't ever "go away" unless they are surgically  removed.  However, like me they seem to come and go with stress.  Try not to push so much when going to the restroom, eat lots of fiber.  I like the wipes made for hemorrhoid treatment, they have aloe and feel much better.  I too am not a fan of the capsules and only used them when I was highly stressed with planning my wedding.  GL.

  • Have you tried a sitz bath with epsom or sea salts or even a cold compress for the itching?

Also, I use a collapsible step stool for BM and it helps to not strain by putting you in more of a squatting position and lets gravity assist.  The one I use is similar to this one: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=13990999

  • I actually broke out in a terrible itchy rash all around my undercarriage/buns/upper thighs a few weeks postpartum, and it was related to my crazy night sweats and possibly the pads I was using. I never figured out the cause, but it eventually went away. You may be all done with the night sweats (I can't remember when that stopped), but you may have either a yeast rash or just normal healing itching. Anything cold soothes itching really well, and over the counter 1% hydrocortisone cream or ointment also works great unless you have a yeast rash. A yeast rash is usually red and sometimes damp, like a diaper rash. Putting hydrocortisone (a steroid) on that will still soothe the itch, but actually make the infection worse.

As for hemorrhoids, it depends on how big they are if they will go away or not. Most smaller hemorrhoids will eventually go away, but some may have to be removed surgically. The important thing is to avoid straining as much as possible, so take extra fiber, water, stool softeners or whatever you need to have a nice easy BM. Don't try to make anything happen if you don't have the urge to go, etc. Sitz baths and hydrocortisone cream or Preparation H also work really well. Only time will tell! Good luck...

  • I do think once you have hemorrhoids once it is easier to get them again, but I've had them on and off for a LONG time, and they've actually been better since having DS.

Not sure about the vaginal itching. Lots of luck!

  • How much pain are you in when you poop?  I was in terrible pain for months before the docs finally figured out that I had one large and one small anal fisure- both infected.  Apparently it's something that can happen when you give birth... don't ask me why, something about the pushing.  I and the docs were operating under the assumtions that it was hemorrhoids when it wasn't.  Once they prescribed some cream to take the infection away, it was quick healing.  GL

I'd describe it as moderate pain, but if I try some of the other suggestions and the pain doesn't subside I'll certainly ask the doctor about this. Had my 6 week appointment the other day and I thought he'd be doing a pap and checking me out, and he didn't. But maybe I'll have to ask him to check out my bottom end next time Embarrassed that'd be so much easier if my doctor wasn't super attractive =)

thanks for all the suggestions ladies!

It's pretty awkward no matter who does it.  GL!
