34 Weeks Pelvic Exam Early because of Leep?? Dr. says what??

I had my first pelvic exam yesterday (34 weeks) and am usually always very rushed when with my doctor because she gets behind etc. Every appointment is super rushed and I never really understand what she is saying. All I know is she said she felt the babies head and that i had to have this pelvic exam early because of a leep procedure. I think she was saying i'm at risk to deliver early from the leep some of my cervix was shortnened and i already have a short cervix.. she gave me my package with all my medical info to bring with me to the hospital in the event i go early. also wrote on the notes "baby low"

I'm due may 11th and wondering if anyone has had a leep and delievered early? or knows more about this and also do you think the baby being low means I'm going to have a baby any day?

  • I had a leep done and LO#1 very low early on and I was never told there was a risk of early l&d.  In fact, I was induced 5 days after my EDD and it took FOREVER to dilate.  I went in at 0, and was on pitocin for 8+ hours before I got to 3 and then stalled there.  My OB had to manually stretch my cervix (NOT fun) and it still took another 10+ hours before I was fully dilated and could push.  Apparently it was the scar tissue that caused the slow to no dilation.

I can't say that is the case for everyone BUT it is the complete opposite of what your Dr is telling you, so I wouldn't take what you were told as an absolute.

  • I had a leep done about 6 years ago. Had DD almost 3 years after the procedure and my doc never mentioned it, nor did I go into labor early. Not sure if it has to do with how soon after the leep you get pregnant?

I've had a leep done before (about 4 yrs ago) and when I got pregnant they started sending me to a specialist at 12wks.  I went every 2 wks to get my cervix checked up until 31 wks.  I didn't mind though because I got to see my LO every two weeks!  (They did ultrasounds at each visit).

This was just precaution but since they released me my regular OB hasnt said anything about it.

  • I've had cervical cryosurgery (another alternative to a LEEP) and they haven't mentioned going early.  They do seem more diligent about checking my cervix length at the ultrasounds and I have also had it checked once so far and I think the doctor plans to at my next visit.  From what I have read online, these types of procedures don't create problems during pregnancy very often (that was certainly what I was told before I had the procedure 5 years ago as well).

  • Im a lurker... I had a LEEP done 1 year prior to getting pg and at my 18 week anatomy scan had a shortened cervix and was put on modified bedrest (taken out of work to work from home where I could be in a recliner or laid up in the bed, not sitting at a desk). I also had a history of PTL from DD1. I was put on complete bedrest at 25w, due to PTL. I managed to carry til 37w5d, when DD2 was ready to come... I did have the cerival checks very often to keep tabs on my cerival length.
  • Thanks everyone - I think maybe i misunderstood her about it meaning labor could come earlier - i didn't actually understand what she meant but now after reading everyone's response I have a better idea of what she meant.
