Gas

Just looking for any ideas you guys may have. My little girl is almost 3 weeks now. The 1st week I nursed and then I switched to formula - Similac sensitive (it was recommended by a friend). Since we switched to formula my little girl is so gassy. She is straining, face red, and really grunting passing a ton of gas. It seems like she is in pain; I don't know if I should switch formulas. We got some gas drops but not sure how much that will really help. Don't think it is a milk allegry because my pediatrician said that there would probably be blood in the stool. Maybe this is all normal and I am overreacting; I am a FTM. Just don't want to see my LO in pain. If anyone is in the same boat or has suggestions I would appreciate it! Thanks so much!!

Re: Gas

  • I bf and my LO always grunts and turns red after.  A lot of time she seems like she is pooing but there will be nothing in her diaper.  I also started gas drops which I think help a little.  My ped told me yesterday to bicycle her legs or bring them up to her belly to help the gas out.  I think a lot of it is just normal, but if its constant I would talk to your ped.

A quick question- any reason why you went immediately to the sensitive formula?  This may have nothing to do with it, but I discussed switching to formula with my ped yesterday and she specifically said to start with normal formula first.

  • Grunting and straining are somewhat normal for newborns as they are getting used to their digestive systems. However I feel DS has quite a bit of gas so I started giving him gas drops today which seem to help. I haven't had much success with bicycling the legs though. Sometimes tummy time seems to help too.

  • I noticed that my daughter had less gas and constipation when we switched from Similac to Enfamil (regular).

  • I am seeing a lot of gas in DD too...She was on Similac Neosure since she was a preemie.  It was starting to give her gas...but, it did not seem like she could get it out...more like it was gas pains and she couldn't pass the gas.  So, Pedi put her on Enfamil Newborn.  She seems to now be overly gassy, not with gas pains but with really smelly farts!  Normal?  Should I be trying a sensitive or gentle one instead?  Sigh...

  • Mine was still gassy on Similac Sensitive... We have switched to Soy and she feels MUCH better. She might have been lactose intolerant, so maybe give the Soy a chance.
