Insurance coverage of childbirth classes

When I signed up for my childbirth class, the teacher said that insurance should cover it.  I submitted my claim to my insurance (a month and a half ago, but that's another story) and they denied it today.  The only reason I was given was "This service is included in the allowed amount of another related service."  Does anyone know what this means and/or is there anything I can do about this?

Re: Insurance coverage of childbirth classes

  • I don't know what that line means, but I called my insurance company and they didn't cover the cost either.

  • I've never heard of insurance covering childbirth classes.

  • I've never heard of them covering them either.  I think it's because they are elective.  I have aetna and I asked in the beginning if things like that were covered, and they said no.

Mine covered about $15 worth of the class tuition. I would call the insurance company and see what other service they are talking about.

  • I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and was told they'd cover (at least partially) the cost for Childbirth Class. Unfortunately I was in the hospital at the time of the class so I had to cancel it, so I never found out if that insurance coverage would have happened.

My insurance covers the class. I had to submit my certificate of completion & a payment receipt. I'd just call them to ask what that line means.

  • We just recently submitted ours for reimbursement, and haven't heard back yet. We have Blue Cross Blue Sheild of MA, and were told we could be reimbursed up to $90 (or $100...can't rememeber, class was $159).

    Definitely call and find out.

Neither have I. Too late for me to check now since we already took ours.

No its not. You submit your request after you complete the class.

  • I have BlueCross BlueShield too, so maybe there is hope.  I'll call them now to clarify, then talk to the teacher tonight.  Thanks ladies!

  • I have BCBS and was told they do not cover it. The nurse at the hospital told us that lots of insurance companies do though. Maybe I'll try submitting a claim after I finish just for kicks.

  • My insurance will reimburse for the cost of some health-based courses, including childbirth and breastfeeding classes. There's a limit on the amount per class and total per year that will be reimbursed. I opted to take the free classes offered by my doctor's clinic, so haven't really paid much attention to what the hospital offers.
  • our instructor told us to check with insurance because classes MAY be covered... i don't think it's all that normal for them to be covered though
