Natural Birth

Considering home birth

Some circumstances have changed allowing the possibility for a home birth (it's a long story and I won't bore you with the details) This is ultimately what MH and I wanted all along so it's exciting.

I have an OB and a midwife. I actually like my OB a lot better, she and I mesh well and she's very natural in her practice. But I am not so sure either of them will be on board with a home birth. MH delivered his 2 older kids, at home, unassisted and this is what we wanted to do, just me, him, our son and my mom. But I don't see my care providers liking this one bit. Should I share our plans with them now, or wait? Do you think they would drop me as a patient if I did? (my son has been dropped by 2 doctors because of our "hippy tree-hugger" ways. One was simply that I would not give the flu shot.) I am worried about that though.

And I do not the risks involved and all of that, I have done my research. I have a lot of flack coming at me IRL, I am hoping this is a good place to get info, tips, etc.

I am going to the birth stories board to look there, any good home birth stories you have?

Re: Considering home birth

  • You may be surprised. I was really scared to bring it up until I found a blog that talked about how supportive my hospital midwife was of homebirth. In fact she has since told me that her 5th child was born at home and she actually used to be a hb midwife before she got her CNM. So when I finally worked up the nerve to talk to her about it, she told me her stance and even had a recommendation for me. It didn't work out with the HB midwife (too expensive, not as responsive as I need, and it was just really late in my pregnancy to make the switch) so I decided to stay with the hospital midwife whom I absolutely love. I just hate the hospital where I am going to give birth.

All I am saying is that you may be surprised. Maybe talk to the midwife first and feel her out and see what her stance is. If you receive poor reception then just don't mention it again and go about your plans.

Also sometimes the HB midwives know which doctors are more agreeable to HB so you can ask her too.

edit to add: my hospital midwife also said that if I end up having an emergency UC (which is not my plan but something I have to be prepared for because of my history) that I can call her to meet me at the hospital to make sure they don't perform any unneccesary tests/procedures etc. or that I can just come into her office (during office hours) and she can check both baby and me out.
