Extra u/s at end of pregnancy for VBAC candidates?

Did your OB/Midwife do a late ultrasound at the end of your pregnancy before a VBAC attempt?  I will ask my OB at my next appointment, but I am just curious if they check the size of the baby or anything else that might affect the success of VBAC.

  • I'm almost 36 weeks. My last ultrasound was at 20 weeks, and I don't have anymore planned. They aren't very accurate in determining weight. They can be about 2 lbs off.

  • I did not have one.  Late ultrasounds can be up to 2 lbs off in either direction so not really worth it.  To say a baby is somewhere between 6 and 10 lbs isn't very helpful.

  • Nope, I didn't get another ultrasound after the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I don't know that there's anything they can really tell by ultrasound that will predict success of a vbac (besides positioning, which you can often determine by feel)- size of baby isn't a good indicator, imho.

  • As per the NM Assoc of Midwives guidelines, I had to have a third-tri u/s to be sure the placenta wasn't over my c/s scar.  It was the only u/s I had--though I could have had an elective one to find out the sex of the baby.

  • At the end I was having weekly u/s and the stress test things.  But I also had GD and went over 40wk, so I think it was more about my placenta than anything. They never gave me a weight estimate. I did have a vbac.

  • Yes, I just had one at my 37 week appointment. I however have an anterior placenta, and they needed to make sure my placenta isn't adhered to my previous c/s scar. With my last vbac, I only had one because I was a high-risk (they thought DS had down syndrome), I didn't have an AP with him.

They did a growth scan too. And they can be +/- 1lb in either direction. But between that, and the midwife manipulating my belly, they are fairly sure of the size of the baby. I'm expected to deliver around an 8-8.5 girl.

  • I will have a growth scan at 36 weeks.  I have GD, so they are trying to make sure LO doesn't end up as big as 10lb DS.
