Naps

Do you ever wake up your LO if they are napping too long?  Normally DD only naps for 30 or 40 mins at a time but sometimes she will sleep for hours.  I'm wondering if ever I should wake her from a nap to ensure good night time sleep.

Re: Naps

  • NO.  We believe in letting sleeping babies lie.  The only time we would wake her up is if we needed to leave or something like that.  If she doesn't sleep enough during the day, she won't sleep at night.  Also, keep in mind that babies start transitioning to longer naps and awake periods around this age, so it may just be a natural progression.

Even if it is a late nap and runs long and might effect bedtime?

  • I never wake a sleeping baby unless I have to.

My DD usually only naps 30-45 min at a time, but on the rare occasions she naps longer (up to 2 hours!), it has not affected her nighttime sleep (and she's a great nighttime sleeper).

My only complaint about those long naps is I wish I knew ahead of time when they were going to happen!

  • Me too!  The long naps are awesome but if only we knew it was going to be 2 hrs instead of 30 mins!

I guess this is sticky....depends how close to bedtime?  With DD, if she hasn't gone down during her last nap window, I just keep her up and expect a fussy baby (and maybe try to get her down a *little* earlier - but she doesn't take going down earlier well).

Occasionally we are out close to bedtime and she falls asleep in her carseat and I let her sleep.  If I've had sleep problems on those night (too few occasions to be sure), it's getting her down for the night, NOT her staying asleep for the night.

But my DD is such a bad napper that I let her sleep whenever she falls asleep during the day.  :/

I wake DS if it starts running into his night time routine, especially if it's already been a long nap and is pushing over 2 hours. DH picks up DS from daycare and sometimes he is so exhausted from daycare he will fall asleep for a LONG time when he gets home. If I don't wake him up it sets his whole night back and he seems to be fussier and harder to put down for the night.

I don't ever wake him up to ensure a good night's rest though, he seems to sleep better at night when he takes good naps during the day.

  • I don't wake LO. Sometimes when he gets home from daycare he'll take a nap around 6pm and sleep 30 minutes or so. At first I thought this would be an issue but he'll wake up and we'll put him down for the night 45min to an hour later and he actually sleeps better.

We have only made this mistake 1 time.  If baby is sleeping you just wait it out.

  • No way, no how would I wake the kid up when he's asleep

  • I wake my LO up from her naps for two reasons. One reason is if her nap is longer than 2 hours. If she sleeps longer than 2 hours, when she wakes up, she is STARVING! If I wake her up at 2 hours, she eats her normal 5 oz. The other reason would be during her evening nap. She normally takes her evening nap at 7pm and if I let her sleep longer she wakes up at 1am and won't go back to sleep for another hour or two. When I wake her up at 9:00 from her 7pm nap, she eats and then fall asleep again within 30 minutes and STTN. This is what works for us.
