Super Baby Foods - Beans, Legumes, and Grains?

Hi, all!

The SuperBabyFoods book (is anyone else using that) has a lot of recommendations for "super baby porridge" with lots of different grains and beans and stuff... grind them to a powder before cooking, etc.  Sounds complicated BUT also sounds really healthy.

Does anyone have a recommendation for what to give, grain and bean wise, to my 8 month old, and how to prepare it?  I like the SuperBabyFood book but it seems REALLY time consuming to grind dry rice and grains every 2-3 days and make "porridge"... maybe it's not that big of a deal?  Or does anyone make the food and THEN puree it?  Or maybe I don't need to overthink it?  I do know that I left peas a TINY bit chunky a few weeks ago and DS was gagging... so I don't think he's ready for beans, etc., even if I cut them in half.  The only "finger food" he's eaten so far are puffs!  He loves them.

Anyway, thanks in advance!  :)

Re: Super Baby Foods - Beans, Legumes, and Grains?

  • gagging is normal, I gave my daughter cooked beans and cooked lentils, she loved them! If you are worried just blend them after you cooked them.

In our house we eat lots of oatmeal, I have fed my daughter oatmeal very quickly after she started solids I just fed it too her plain a few teaspoons of cooked and cooled oatmeal.  This is the same for any grain cereal we eat. I have made it with so many different things... raisins apples cinnamon just to name a few.

We eat brown basmati and lentil soup called "dahl" it is a favorite of ours I love the soup with cabbage and onions tons of garlic and curry... my daughter started eating curry and garlic on her food around 8-9 months, no salts or sugars but spice is something you can add a little bit of at this age.

Hummus is a fantastic 'puree' that everyone in our house loves, I used to spread in on soft tortilla slices or cucumber or on an apple for my daughter, again this is more of a 'finger' food but I do think that 8-9 months is a great age to introduce more finger foods!

I would suggest offering him finger food more often, he is at a great age for it and it is very fun for babies just put two or three cooked beans on his highchair and let him have fun, just sit back and watch.

    Hope this helps!

  • I wouldn't bother with purees, especially @ 8 months. He may gag a bit @ first but that's fine & normal. Babies have a more sensitive gag reflex than older toddlers & adults.

Quinoa is a super food, easy to prepare & should be easy for your LO to eat. We used to do that & some lentils for Ari. Brown rice & lentils is another fave.

Looking into Baby Led Weaning. It's basically skipping purees & going straight to regular food. I definitely wouldn't have spent all that time making porridge & grinding stuff.

  • We did try the Super Porridge for a while. I would grind up enough combos for a month at a time and store in Ball jars in the fridge. Then I would make 2-3 days worth at a time. It was all pretty icky to me, but DS was okay with it usually. I don't know that it did anything good.

I don't remember exactly what I did, but I think it was like black beans and brown rice, chickpeas and millet, red beans and oats...something like that.

It really was all a pain, and in the end he started refusing to eat it and I had 3 almost full Ball jars.

Oh, and your blender will smell like it is going to explode. You have to just keep going.

  • I don't know the book you mention, but I often pureed lentils and black beans for DD when she was younger and it wasn't that hard. I don't remember at what age I started making her amaranth-quinoa porridge, but I still make it now for the whole family. Here's the recipe:

Combine 2/3 cup quinoa with 1/3 cup amaranth and 2 cups cold water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes (until water disappears).

For DD, I serve it with some milk, cinnamon & fresh cut fruit (or fruit puree when she was younger). DH and I prefer it salty, with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper and some parmesan cheese.
