Success after IF

I was just "that mom" at Target

You know, the mom with the screaming infant and the toddler throwing stuff off the shelves?   Yeah, that was me.   High five.

We just got our car back after it was in the shop for two weeks, and we leave tomorrow for Easter, so I had to go pick up a few things.   Too bad H woke up earlier than I thought and was starving.   Cue baby hysteria.   Anna was happy enough, but insisted on throwing her hair bow and other stuff from the cart on the ground while I was trying to convince H to take his pacifier.   After we checked out, I ran to the car, gave Anna my iPhone, and fed Harrison in the front seat.   Thank goodness for that iPhone!    :)

I was, however, grateful to the woman in front of me while we were checking out.   She could have said any number of things about the chaos going on behind her, but she simply said, "I have two young ones close like that...it gets easier.".  Good response.

Gotta love days like today!

I have been there, actually at Target as well. I was about to burst into tears when a Mom came up to me, with her two older children (maybe 8 and 9) and told me not to worry about it, and she promised it would get better. Made me feel much better!

  • Awww, I'm sorry! Been there MANY times. If it makes you feel better, I think eventually it becomes slightly less distressing. Yesterday I stood in the sippy cup aisle as Boodle screamed bloody murder and sobbed because her brother kicked her, and then the brother started up when I chastised him for kicking her and because I threatened to take his stickers, so I sat there with both of them crying loudly, and it didn't even faze me, I just kept shopping as people walked by and gave me sympathetic looks (and I may have casually told each of the kids they were ok and the like).

  • You are not alone!  I was in the check out like at the grocery store last week and Nate had JUST finished eating an entire apple and was screaming for more food.  Of course I had no snack stuff with me b/c I knew he was going to get the apple./  The line was long, so we weren't getting out of there fast.  Another mom walked up to me and gave me gummy snacks in little packets for both Nate and Sammie.  She just gave me a knowing look smiled and nodded at her toddler.  Needless to say, I thanked her profusely!

    Thank goodness for other mommy's!

  • I think I am that mom every time I step into a store (minus the infant)!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • I had one of my twins with me at Trader Joe's and he would not sit in the carriage and was having a huge meltdown, flailing all over the place. I was so embarrassed. Rather than give me dirty looks, this one woman came over to me and started offering her phone to ds as a distraction. She also offerd to run into TJ's to get me what I needed. I couldn't believe how kind she was and in my hysteria I don't think I let her know how much her kindness really touched me.

  • I am always that mom...in fact, today when we were checking out, neither of mine were crying but another kid a few aisles away was.  I actually said to my kids that I think this is the first time that I have heard another kid crying in the store - it is usually us!  Earlier in the trip, however, DS was hysterical because I wouldn't buy him a new train.  And DD kept grabbing things off the shelves - and had a meltdown when I took shaving cream away from her (that we didn't need)!  They had both just calmed down by the check out Wink

  • Ugh, I hate it when I'm "that mom " but it happens! I'm glad that lady was nice! One of our worst "performances" to date was in a big bookstore ....DS was in hysterics because I wouldn't let him stay and play with the train table they have in the kids area.....DD was running away from me,....so I'm carrying one who is screaming and running after the other. I got more than a few stares.

  • I'll be "that" mom too soon I imagine.

Not long ago I was "that" mom chasing Henry all over the store, cuz I made the bonehead decision to let him walk instead of ride in the cart. Fun times!

  • It happens to all of us at some point...  it doesn't even phase me that much when that stuff happens now ;)~  One that really sticks out to me was taking my two kids (3months and 23months) to pick up my 2 dogs at Petsmart.  After we got the dogs my oldest through a fit in the store because I wouldn't let her walk them. I let her work it out and everyone in the store was staring as I stood there holding two barking dogs, pushing a stroller and one kid laying on the ground throwing a fit....and I just stood there.  Then it woke up the baby and there was more crying and we finally we got going. it happened again as we were walking out...threw herself on the ground in the middle of the parking lot.  Ugg... my stress level was through the roof!  Learned my lesson about taking 2 kids to pick up two hyper dogs though....have never done that again!

  • That was really sweet of the lady in front of you. It's nice when people are kind. All too often people are too quick to judge/be rude in that situation.

  • Been there (a LOT) lately.  I will take them anywhere, including grocery shopping for small trips.  But for weekly grocery shopping I must go alone since I still refuse to sanitize and use those carts w/ the little steering wheels.  DS2 goes in the cart and DS1 runs around and takes boxes/cans anything off the shelf so he can "stack" them in the middle of the floor.  DS2 in the cart w/ his octopus arms manages to grab things off the shelf (no matter where I am in the aisle) and somehow turns himself around while strapped in and starts grabbing stuff in the cart which ends up on the floor.  It is quite comical as I imagine what I look like w/ stuff flying all over the place.  So until grocery shopping gets boring for them or at least until DS1 decides he wants to listen then I go it alone!
