  • I am no expert, but IMO I think babies can smile that early.  Think about it, do you smile when you have gas?  When my DS has gas he cries and pulls his feet up to his stomach.  So, your DD is smiling according to me Smile
  • I believe that babies can smile at any age. My little girl started smiling at me at 4 weeks and has smiled in her sleep since birth. :)

    LMAO Yes

the saying in my family is that the babies are simply smiling at their guardian angels.  I like that a lot better than attributing it to gas

  • According to Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, babies can mimic certain facial expressions from birth.  For example, if your baby is in Quiet Alert mode and looking at you, you can make an O with your mouth for 10 seconds or so, repeat it as necessary and the baby will mimic it.  IT WORKS!  I tried this with Clara and it was freaking adorable.

So, the next time, I held a smile.  Then she smiled first with one half of her mouth, then the other.  It was very deliberate and she was looking at me the whole time.  I'm sure it was an actual smile and not just coincidental gas.  Her poopface grimace is different than this.

  • The book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding calls these "butterfly smiles" and says they are a sign of emotional satisfaction. My LO has been doing this since he was 3 days old. I'm inclined to believe they are something other than just "gas" because he makes a different (unhappy or surprised face) for gas and poops. I like butterfly smiles :-).

  • I haven't seen a "real" smile yet.  he smiles randomly mostly in his sleep.  I am waiting for me to smile at him and him smile back or be in response to something I am doing.

Does anyone elses baby do the old man tortoise thing... I die laughing when LO does it.. he stretches his neck right out and pulls this funny little screwed up face then goes all wide eyed with puckered lips and reminds me of an old tortoise..it's so cute

Yup. Usually in the middle of nursing she'll pull back and do that but her eyes are usually closed.

LO first smiled the night she was born, at my mom. I don't know that it's exactly a social smile, but I don't think it's gas either! I love watching her face go through a whole array of expressions in just a few seconds. Who knows what thoughts are going along with them?

The one happy expression I am sure reflects her true feelings is her wide-eyed delight when she's about to BF. She acts like she's the luckiest baby ever and it's totally adorable!
