Tell me about your morning routine

Starting next week I am working longer days so that I can take Fridays off (I'm working 9 hour days and 36 rather than 40 hours a week) so I really need to get my butt out the door in the mornings.  Right now what we do is I get up at 5:30.  Kids are usually awake by 6 and DH keeps them happy until I'm doing getting ready at 6:15.  DH gets ready and I get both kids fed and dressed.  Goal is to get all of them out the door by 7:15 so that I can pump and get to work by 8 (15-ish minute commute).  Whether that actually happens depends on things like how long DD nurses and how cooperative DS is in getting dressed.  Today they didn't leave until 7:35 which means there is no chance of being at work at 8 (unless I pump in the car)

Just curious how everyone else is working morings

Re: Tell me about your morning routine

  • We don't have a lot of getting ready for work, especially since DH doesn't shower in the morning, but here is our routine.  DH and I both get up at 5.  I take a quick shower and get ready, I don't really care how I look at work so I usually air dry my hair and throw on a little make up.  While I'm showering DH is taking care of the dogs and packing his lunch.  A little after 5:30, I wake up DD, change her diaper and nurse her.  While I'm nursing DH eats breakfast and when I'm done, I eat breakfast.  While I'm eating/finishing getting ready.  DH dresses DD and keeps her occupied until we all leave the house around 6:15-6:30.  It's quick and hectic and doesn't leave room for error but we make it work somehow.

  • I get DD#1's food, DD#2's bottles, the diapers and changes of clothes together the night before.  I get up between 6:30-6:45a and get ready first (I'm very low maintenance, it takes me 10-15 minutes).  Then I get DD#2 up and give her meds, get her dressed and put her in her car seat with some toys.  Then I pack up bags and load the car.  At about 7:15 I wake up DD#1 if she is not up yet and get her dressed, brush her teeth and do her hair.  We are out the door by 7:25.  Daycare is 2 blocks away so I drop them off and I'm on my way to work by 7:30 (I have a 30 minute commute and start at 8).  My DCP feeds the girls in the morning.

  • DH gets up at 5:45 and I get up just before 6 (he lets me sleep a little since I get up with DS during the night). When things go as planned, DH is ready just a little after 6 and that's about when DS wakes up.  DH gets him dressed while I get ready and then DH wakes up DD at 6:15 if she hasn't gotten up on her own.  He starts getting DD ready while I finish getting ready then I go help with the kids.  After DD is ready, we all go to the kitchen and she starts eating breakfast (usually prepped the night before).  I put DS in his carseat when DH leaves around 6:40 then load the car (and realistically get last minute things ready for the day, but I do try to do everything the night before).   We are out the door by 7:05.  DD uses a plastic container with compartments and a lid for breakfast and usually finishes eating in the car.  DS doesn't usually have to nurse before we leave, but I nurse him at daycare at 7:35ish.  I am at school by 8.  This all depends on DD being cooperative which is about 3/5 of the week.  When she doesn't cooperate, mornings are pretty stressful.

  • Pre-baby I took forever to get ready in the AM. So now I will take my showers at night before bed. I wake around 6:00 - 6:30 normally and will play with DD for a few min. My DH will take a shower and get coffee/breakfast/lunches ready and I will get ready (makeup/dress/ hair) then get LO dressed and we leave around 7:30am. I usually dont feed LO because she doesnt like to eat first thing in the AM. She usually wakes up during the night a few times to eat anyways.

  • I'm in the same boat as you, I've been working part-time since going back to work and now will be going back to full days.  And on Monday mornings I have to be in the office by 7:45 for an 8:00 meeting (seriously, who schedules an 8am Monday meeing!!).

DH is at work much earlier than I am, he actually is out the door before I usually even wake up, so I have to get both myself and the baby ready.  I get everything ready the night before, like my pump parts washed, bottles prepped and labeled, and DD's diaper bag ready.  All I have to do is put the ice pack in my cooler and get her bottles.  I have been showering at night, so I get up around 6:30, get ready until 7, and then get her up and ready.  It takes me about 30 minutes to get myself ready and her 30 minutes.  DD's daycare is 3 minutes from my house and then I have a 20 minute commute.

  • DH only works 2-3 days a week and keeps DS on his days off. The days that he does have to work he has to leave at 6:30 and works 12 hours shifts so I am the only one at home to get LO ready to leave on those days. I have to be at work at 7:15. LO goes to a sitter that is 5-6 min away and is on the way to my job.

I always pack the sitter's bag the night before and put it in the car. I pack my lunch and his bottles in the bags and put them in the fridge ready to grab. I set the alarm for 5:20-5:30 and usually get up by 5:45. I take a shower and DH stays in the bed listening out for LO in the RNP. LO is EBF and wakes at different times during the night to eat so I NEVER know when he is going to eat. This is very difficult. I take a shower and if LO wakes he will sit in there with me while I dry my hair (he loves the hairdryer). DH will get him changed and hand him over. Then if he is fussing and needs to eat, I nurse him on the boppy while I put on my makeup. Then DH leaves and I am left with LO.

Sometimes if it isn't time for him to eat, I have to get all my pump stuff out (lately I've been setting it up because more often than not, I have to end up pumping). I will pump, give that bottle to the sitter to feed him as soon as he gets hungry, or if he just ate an hour before, I store it in the fridge. Every morning is different because of this whole EBF thing! I take him to the sitter for a quick drop off and I'm off to work. I pick him up by his 3:15 feeding if he's on schedule. (Every 3 hours, 4oz)

I've been back to work since the beginning of Feb. so I've learned to live with it.

If it's a day where DH stays with him, then we skip everything except the eating process! DH will go ahead and get up with him at 7:00 after I feed him and care for him for the rest of the day!

  • Well this morning was my first morning bavk to work, but it went pretty well considering.

DH gets up and leaves by 6:30.

My alarm goes off at 6:15.  I snoozed until 6:25.

    6:30-6:40 - I shower.

6:40-7:00 - I gathered my crap that i couldn't gather the night before (ice packs, cold food to take to work, lunch stuff, etc) and ate breakfast with my 5 year old (who was up early this morning and already on breakfast when I came downstairs courtesy of DH)

7:00 - 7:10 - get 2 year old dressed and hair and teeth done (baby woke up at this point, 5 year old entertained him so I could deal with 2 year old

7:10 - 7:15 - make 2 year old breakfast and get her started eating

    7:15 - 7:20 - get baby dressed

7:20-7:40 - nurse baby (older two can watch cartoons while I do this if they are ready to go)

7:40-7:45 - put shirt on, bags in car, baby in seat, kids in car

7:45-7:50 - drive 5 year old to school and drop her off

7:50-8 - drive younger kids to daycare

8-8:05 - drop off kids at daycare

    8:05-8:20 - drive to work

Technically supposed to be at work at 8, but that never happens, but it's okay.  I keep breakfast stuff, lunch stuff, and snacks at work too just in case I don't have a chance to eat or pack stuff.

  • Our mornings aren't too bad right now because DH is still on paternity leave.  The week after next week we will all have to get out the door, but we'll probably only need to shift everything about 15 min earlier to make time for daycare drop-off.

Bottles and pump parts are washed the night before and bottles are made.  Once DD starts daycare, I will have her stuff packed the night before, and DH will have to shower at night.  I may shower at night, too.

DD wakes me up anywhere from 6:30-7:30am.  She nurses from one side while I pump the other.  DH walks the dog while DD eats.

Around 8am, I hand DD over to DH and I get ready for work.  I leave around 8:45.

The only thing that is tricky for us is the morning nap.  Not sure what to do if DD wakes up at 6:30 and we leave the house for daycare at 8:30.  She needs to be back down for a nap by that point, and then she needs to eat again by 9:30.

We have this problem every morning.  DD wakes up before 6 sometimes and by the time we get everyone out the door she is ready for a nap and cranky.  I can't really put her down for a nap and then sit for an hour waiting to take her to daycare, so we just push through

  • I'm up at 5am and I take a quick shower, get dressed, put on some makeup, and then pump around 5:30am. My goal is to be out of the house by 5:50am (my hours are 7:30-4pm and I take the train into downtown Chicago). LO usually sleeps while I'm getting ready and wakes right before I leave, which is when DH will get up and take the morning shift. Sometimes I nurse him before I leave, sometimes I don't. It's definitely hectic and I'm always feeling rushed so I try to get as much ready for the night before as I can (lay out my clothes, LO's clothes, make lunches and get the bottles ready).

  • I get up at 5 to get to work by 8.  I am up at 5, pump until 5:30, dressed and ready by 6:45.  DH gets DS ready at 6:30 but DH has to leave at 7.  While DS eats breakfast, I wake up DD, feed her and get the kids out by 7:20.  I'm lucky that both kids are sleepers so we have to wake them both up in the morning and can get completely ready without them underfoot.  We do everything we can the night before - get bottles ready, make lunch, etc and DH takes everything out to my car on his way out. We get DS dressed immediately, while he's still groggy from sleep and put his shoes on while he eats breakfast, to eliminate any wrestling matches.

  • If all goes well...

I get up at 6:10, shower and get myself ready for the day.  I wake DH up at 6:45am and he showers and gets ready for the day.  I get D2 up and take her downstairs, make coffee and breakfast for me and then nurse D2 while eating.  D1 usually wakes up around 7am, comes downstairs and gets breakfast for herself (yogurt).  DH comes downstairs and when I'm done nursing D2, I put her down with DH and D1 and I pump.  DH will change everyone's clothes/diapers or whatever else needs to be done.

Then I generally run around like a chicken with my head cut off for 10 minutes gathering all the last minute stuff and we all head out the door.  I aim for 7:30 but its more like 7:45am.  We also run into the problem that daycare doesn't open until 8:15am but I need to be at work at 8:00am.  DH does drop off but he doesn't want to leave to early and I have a tough time getting out the door before them.

  • Right now, this is our schedule:

I wake up between 5am and 5:30am. I pump and get LO's bottles ready. At 6am, I take a shower and get dressed. At 6:45am, I wake up my LO, change her, and feed her. At 7:20am, I put everything together and put it in my car and we're out the door by 7:30am. This will probably change in a couple months when she starts eating solids more often.
