Working Moms

What would you do?

I'm a lurker, but need some help.  I have a one day conference next week in Philadelphia - I'm taking the train from Baltimore.  I'll basically be gone for 12 hours.  I usually pump about 3 times during the day at work between 9 and 5.

My question is - do I lug my pump with me and try to find a place to pump and keep to my regular schedule?  Or just take a manual with me and try to pump at least once or twice?

I just don't know when & how long the breaks will be, where I'll be able to do it and it's a lot of stuff to lug around all day - in the train stations, cabs, conference center.  It's only one day - my supply is pretty good, so I shouldn't take too much of a hit if I go off schedule for one day, right?

My baby will be fine, she'll get fed before I leave, she'll have her usualy meals at daycare, and I have enough of a freezer stash that my DH should be able to feed her before I get home.

Re: What would you do?

  • I'm paranoid about my supply, so I would lug the pump and do my best to keep my normal schedule.

  • I would probably be uncomfortable to go that long with only a manual pump to take the edge off.  Are you already taking a lot of bags and other stuff to the conference with you?  My pump bag with everything in it wasn't *that* awkward to carry around.

  • Definitely bring the pump. I had to fly for a one day conference (left the airport at 7 am, got back at 7 pm) when DD was 11.5 months. I was only pumping once a day at the time, but I was super uncomfortable and ended up leaking halfway through the day! I only pumped once that day during the conference and once in my car back from the airport, but in retrospect I should have pumped more. I would have burst if she was younger.

  • I also live in baltimore and the drive to philly is not bad at all I just went two weeks ago.  Any chance you could drive vs. train?  there are many moms on here who pump and drive.  Otherwise I would get a harmony manual pump so you can at least pump to take edge off

  • Wow!  I thought I had 31 responses!  I had thought about driving but I didn't want to deal with traffic.  I was probably going to pump on my way to the train station anyway.  Oh the logistics of being a pumping mom.

Thanks for the insight ladies...I'll probably just bring my pump.  I think my initial hesitation was because the bag that came with my pump sucks - so I'll have to find a better bag.

  • Bring your pump, duck out of the conference.  Most people are running in and out anyway.

  • I live in Baltimore too.  I'd probably drive so that I'd have my car to go into to pump if needed.  I've ridden on the train a few times and it is a really nice way to commute to Philly but I couldn't imagine pumping on the train unless you had a private seat.  Is that even an option if you purchase a business class ticket?  I've only ever purchased the regular tickets.  I'm also somewhat modest and wouldn't feel comfortable pumping in front of people even with a cover.  The other thing you could do is take the train and bring your pump but contact the conference center ahead of time and ask them if there is a place that you could go pump.  Maybe they have an office or somewhere that they'd let you use.
