Day 6 of fevers....has anyone else been thru this?

My DD is on day 6 of fevers and I'm losing my mind. I had her in the ER this weekend with 106. They tested for everything and concluded a virus. Since then, we've been to the pediatrician twice and got rechechecked for strep, ears, etc, and nothing. They just keep telling me its a virus...wait it out, etc. She has no other symptoms. I'm sure I'll wind up back at the dr by the weekend. Anyone else go thru this?

  • Awww...poor thing (both of you). No, I have not been through this. Sounds like an awful virus. I'm really hoping everything turns around and you get a healthy LO very soon!

  • Last February, my son (DS1) had 5-6 days of fever plus cold/flu symptoms, I kept thinking it would break but when it didn't by the 5th day we went to the clinic and he got an antibotic.  It broke quickly, so after.   Are you rotating Motrin/Tylenol?   They usually have us to do that.

  • DD is on Day 10 or 11 with a fever right now. Fortunately, it hasn't been higher than 100-101 most days, but it's just enough to make her insanely crabby and tired. I can tell she just doesn't feel well. It started with a cold, morphed in to a GI virus that caused on and off vomiting for a week, and now she just seems to remain congested with some loose stools. I finally broke down and took her to the doctor on Monday to check ear ears, etc., but it all checked out fine and we were told it's just a virus that is taking a long time to run its course.

I'm seeing the light, though, because this AM she woke up in a much better mood and seems a ton better! She is still running a really low temp, but I'm hoping she's finally over the hump.

There must be some yucky stuff going around! GL!

  • Yes!  My DD had a fever from a virus for almost 9 days.  It was so frustrating and I was so worried.  Her fever would get as high as 106 at night!  I just kept alternating tylenol and motrin.  Good luck and I hope she feels better soon!

Wow, 9 days! OK, I guess its not totally unusual!
  • Ds gets that at least twice a year and has since he was a baby. The first few times they did blood work, urinalysis, etc because his fever got so high and lasted so long. Finally they just relented and figured that's the way his body responds to viruses. It really is just a virus and there's nothing they can actually do to help. Now that he's 4, it tends to last 5-7 days but when he was younger, it was 8-9 days. At home we just refer to it as "the fever virus" since that's pretty much his only symptom and it's the same every time. Fevers themselves aren't dangerous so your only real thing to be conscious of would be dehydration since ds had no interest in eating or drinking when he was sick like that. Hope she feels better soon.
