How many puffs a day? Do you limit them?

My DS is a GREAT eater and would probably down purees 6 or 7 times a day if we let him... Right now we do two purees at daycare and one with our dinner at home.  But I've started giving him puffs and he LOVES them.  I buy the organic "lower sugar" kind (happy baby, I think) and a serving size is 75 puffs?  That seems like a TON!  Do you really give your kid that many?  How many is too many?  Or how many times a day do you offer them?  OR if it's easier, how quickly does your child go through a whole container of puffs?

Someone on another post called them "baby candy"... are they really that bad?  Because I've been so careful about making all his food from scratch and only doing organics... I would hate to ruin it, but he LOVES feeding them to himself, I like that they dissolve, and I have no idea how I'd make them myself... and I do NOT have the time... I work full time, too!

  • I'm normally a lurker but thought I'd put in my 2cents.  My son is 14 months and he loves puffs and other crackers/pretzels etc.  I rarely give him puffs at home.  They are in the diaper bag just because they are something easy for him to snack on when we are out or waiting on food at a restaurant - and since it takes so many to fill him up he usually still eats a decent meal too.  I think there has to be a balance with everything though - as long as they are just part of your child's food then I think they are fine.

I agree with diana. If you're worried, switch to Cheerios, which are basically the same thing. hth

  • I would not spend another second worrying about it. My DD ate a ton of puffs at first because those were the only thing I felt comfortable letting her practice chewing on. And even puffs I broke in quarters (yes, I was bonkers). There's basically nothing but air in there, anyway. Just let him eat as many as he wants -- once you feel safe letting him try other things, move on to mum mums (which also dissolve), then cheerios. Pretty soon he'll be eating cut up fruit and all sorts of real food, and he won't be willing to touch puffs anymore :-)

This. Unless your child isn't eating a healthy amount of "real" food or is pitching a fit because you're serving veggies for dinner instead of puffs, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • My LO is a puff addict too, and I don't restrict how many she gets.  I'll throw some on her tray along with some avocado, pear, cheese, whatever just so she has a variety of texture.  I noticed that the serving size is 75 too (insane!) and no, I've never given her 75 puffs in a day, I doubt she even gets 75 puffs in a week.  They're more for fun than anything I think.

I would think about maybe sending her to rehab.  She's way too young to be smoking.  :)

HA!  And you can tell I'm on track for getting mother of the year award by adding "I don't restrict how many she gets"  :)

  • I think I am a puff abuser lol.  We did BLW, and he still nurses as his main source of nutrition (he eats everything, but hardly ever actually swallows anything).  We usually only eat out about once a week, and I would bring a few puffs with to distract him while we waited for his food.  However, I've gotten bad about the puffs in the past few months for various reasons.  The biggest puff abuse happens at the grocery store and Target.  DS has eaten an entire container during a shopping trip on multiple occasions.  I buy the "Happy Baby" brand, endorsed by Dr. Sears, and use that as justification for my overuse!

A whole container??  Wowza!  How big is the container?  I give my LO the Gerber Graduates kind and I don't think she would eat the whole container if I let her!  Does he get constipated at all from that many?

  • I have to limit how many I eat a day so LO has some left when he wants a snack (sweet potato puffs?? yummm). Oh, I'm the only one? Hmm...
