how long were you in labor?

first I was wondering how do you count how many hours you were in labor? from the first contraction? from when you started timing? from when you went to the hospital?

Re: how long were you in labor?

  • For me, my water broke at home and I went to the hospital and was not dilated and want getting consistent contractions, so they started pitocin. So I count from the start of pitocin to the start of pushing, which was a total of 12 hours and 4 of those I was asleep! Pushing, I only pushed 8 times to deliver ds!!

  • I start counting from when I had consistent, timeable contractions. Started around ten am Sunday morning and never stopped until her birth on Wednesday afternoon. That's 74 hours. To include three hours of pushing. DH is a former Marine. He is never allowed to complain about boot camp again. ;)

  • When I went to the hospital my contractions were irregular and I couldn't feel them (I was sent in after my routine appt where my internal showed I was 4 cm), however I was having one about every 7-10 minutes. If you count that as active labor, then it was 28 hours, including a half hour of pushing. But My contractions became regular and about 5 minutes apart 7 hours before I gave birth. This is when they started to hurt and I would have gone in on my own.

  • I went to the hospital to be induced at 9:00pm, started pitocin at 9:45, contractions we could time at 9:47, broke water at 10:00, had epi at 10:40, slept until 7:00am, started pushing at 7:21, and DS was born at 7:24. The whole thing was less than 10 hours if you don't count the 45 minutes of changing into my hospital gown and getting settled when I first got there. Actual pushing was just a couple of minutes (2 pushes total.)

  • I started timing contractions 10 min apart at 3pm on my due date, increased to 5-7 min apart by 6pm, 1-2 min apart by 11pm, went to hospital, got pitocin at 10 am, started pushing at 8pm...DD arived at 838...so 28 hours total

  • Approximately 20 hours, four of which was active pushing. My water broke 3 days before my due date and I was induced, because  I was not having contractions. I ended up having a vacuum-assisted delivery. I count the 20 hours starting from the first contractions in the hospital. The pitocin made them pretty painful from the get go.

  • I started having irregular contractions on a Sunday, went to bed early thinking maybe they would progress. They became timeable around 2am on Monday morning and Arlo was born just before am. So.... 5 hours. Only 3 of which were at the hospital. Total whirlwind.

  • I was induced this time so that doesn't count but I wad in labor 17 hrs from first ctx.

  • My water broke before I was effaced or dilated. If you count from when I got the first round of drugs that got things moving along it would be be about 36.5 hours. From when my water broke was 54.5 hours.

  • I went in to be induced at 4am, they started pitocin at 5so that's where I started counting. I was in labor for 19 hours.

  • I count labor as starting from when I got all hooked up to the IV, etc. in the hospital bed, which was at about 11:15am. Sophie was born at 12:56 the next day, so that's about 25 hours, the last 3 of which were pushing.
  • I joked I was in labour from 33 weeks on since I was having consistent non-BH contractions until the day I delivered at 40w1d. I count my active labour starting when my water broke and the most intense contraction occurred at 2pm. I arrived at the hospital at 4pm and 9cm. I was at 10cm an hour later and pushed for an hour. He was born at 6pm, so 4hrs from start to finish.

  • I was aparently in labor most the day that I was working but didnt know. I went in for my scheduled appointment and was hooked up to a monitor. They told me I was having contractions about every 3 - 4 minutes and when they checked me I was 5 cm dilated and 90% thinned out so they sent me to the hospital and broke my water. From the time the broke my water I was in labor an hour and 55 min before my LO came out screamin. I had a very quick first delivery.

Yes please. I will take this next time. Stick out tongue

Not to say it wasn't hard but... I admit to being a little jealous.

lol yeah it was nice... They said next time I'll have to have a scheduled induction date because if my water breaks naturally I might not make it to the hospital in time.

  • My water broke at about 1:30.  I didn't have any contractions until 5:30.  I started pushing around 8:45 and my daughter was born at 9:40.  I consider my labor to be about 4 hours since contractions didn't start until 5:30.

  • I was induced (for high BP), so I count from when they started the Cytotec. It was 19 hours total.

  • Doctor sent me to the hospital at 11 AM after he realized I was 6cm dilated. DS2 was born at 5PM, so 6 hours, I guess. I got my epi at 7cm and never felt a single painful contraction and only pushed for 3 minutes.... Worlds easiest delivery! :)

With DS1 I was induced, labored for 15 hours and pushed for 1.5 hours.

  • I started timing contractions on Feb 22(wed) at around 8 PM. My water broke Thursday morning around 10:30 and baby did not come until Friday at 2:28 AM.

My contractions stopped proggressing around 8PM on Thursday so they started me on Pitocin. That got me going with very intense contractions. I started pushing at around midnight. So yea-about 30 hours. I went as intervention free as I could so no epidural.

It's funny my parents came into town Thursday morning about 30 minutes before my water broke. My grandma's birthday was on Feb 24. So my dad kept joking about how baby should wait to be born the next day. I kept saying I don't want to be in labor for that long. Sure enough baby was born on grandma's birthday.

  • 48 hours...ugh. It was like I was eternally stuck in the '7 out of 10' on the pain scale because my body was having GIANT contractions for 2 days straight but never dilating. I also did not get a moment of sleep in the full 48 hours...it was hell. But I was rewarded by only having to push 5 times, thankfully :)
  • If you count from when they inserted thr foley bulb to c-section, about 18 hours.  But even w/ pitocin, my contractions never became strong enough or regular and I never dilated.  LO was in a funny position and not dropping either.

  • My water broke and I started having contractions about an hour later. Labor from that point was 14 hours, about 15 minutes of it was pushing. Not too shabby!

  • I was induced so I didn't time anything and I was already in the hospital. From feeling the first contraction to giving birth was 7-8 hours. From the time they started pitocin to giving birth was 6 hours. I count from first contraction in my situation. I had consistent contractions before I could feel them, had I been home I would have had no idea.

  • from 1st contraction to born was 3 hours.  it was scary fast. 18 min after we got to the hospital he was born. I barely had an iv and there wasn't even a doctor in the room.
  • My first contraction woke me up at 12:30am but was able to go right back to sleep.  The next time I was awoken by one was at 1:15am.  They started coming about every 10 minutes after that one, so this time there was no going back to sleep.  But 2:00am, they were more like 7 minutes apart and by the time I called the after hours number at 2:45am, they were 5 minutes apart.  Arrived at hospital at 4am and 3 minutes apart, admitted by 5am and 1 minute apart.  Yeah, I really quickly went from nothing to full-on-this-baby-is-gonna-come-today-labor.  DD was born at 8:08pm.

From the very first contraction, I was in labor just under 20 hours, from when I started timing them, it was more like 19 hours.  From when I arrived at the hospital, just over 16 hours.

  • I count from first contraction to babe in arms. For both my labours regular, timeable contractions started very soon/immediately (with DS2 my first contractions were three minutes apart- labour hit me like a bus)

DS1: 16 hours, including three hours of (unsuccessful) pushing (ended in c-section)

DS2: 2 hours, including 1.25 hours of pushing

  • As the pp said, I had consisten non-BH contractions for 3 weeks prior to having my LO - they were from 3-10 minutes apart the entire 3 weeks, although some much painful than others. Babies bottom was off to the left though, so there was no pressure on my cervix. I ended up having a c at 40 weeks 5 days.

  • I was counting from the time my water broke, which was 14 hours. If I count for when my contractions started though it was more like 11 hours.

  • 36 hours from water breaking to baby being born!

26 hours at home after my water broke (I planned on a home birth).  Had to be transferred to hospital after 26 hours cause I was only dilated a 5.  I took an epidural at that point because I hadn't slept in over a day and they started pitocin.  I pushed for 2.5 hours and he was almost 9 lbs!!!!

  • 25 hours from start of contractions. I'm told about 40 minutes to an hour of pushing (I wasn't looking at the clock because it hurt like **** and I have two different people who were there telling me different amounts of time).
