XP: MSPI moms...help

So my son is going to be 6 months old next week. He got an ear infection 2 weeks ago and his diapers got extremely mucuousy. Well I had his ped. test one of the diapers yesterday and it had blood in it (not visible to me). Anyways, we started him on alimentum.

I hear that intolerance to milk and soy protein starts to ease up around his age and goes away by a year in a lot of cases. I plan on keeping him on alimentum until they can retest his diaper to make sure it's infact MSPI. Is there anything else I should be doing? We were told to stop solids for 2 weeks before the diaper can be retested. I just feel really guilty that we didn't catch this sooner.

Just looking for some experiences, tips, advise or whatever else you ladies have to share if you have dealt with this.

 Thanks!

  • Did he have symptoms prior to the ear infection? Was he on antibiotics? If he was on antibiotics, I would wonder if that's what caused the mucous and blood. Antibiotics can be very hard on the stomach/intestines. That aside, you're doing all you can. Monitor what his poop looks like, discontinue solids and follow up with the pedi. If he is MSPI, you'll need to read labels to make sure anything you give him is free of dairy and soy. The FAAN website has ingredient lists you can carry with you to help with reading labels. I hope the alimentum helps! ETA: I don't know if you were bf'ing or ff'ing originally. If you were bf'ing, you can pump to keep up your supply and go dairy and soy free so you can resume bf'ing once the alimentum trial is over. If you were ff'ing, then nevermind that part. :)

  • We reintroduced milk at a year old. One of my twins had outgrown the allergy. But the other hadn't. So then we tried that twin on soy and she had a reaction to that too. We're on Neocate Jr. which, fortunately, is covered by our insurance! We'll be challenging her again when she turns 2. The allergist said most people outgrow these specific allergies by 5 yo at the latest. So I'm crossing fingers that there will be an end for these allergies at least.
