Wedding on DS's 1st B-Day.. What to do?

We got a save the date card last week for our friends wedding for next May in Virginia (We live in MA). Well the wedding in on our sons first birthday and I keep debating if we should go. I know that DS won't know the difference but it kinda bothers me that we wouldn't be having a party for him on his actual birthday if we went. If we went then we would most likely host a party the week before or the week after. I am still torn though.

any thoughts?

  • I would go to the wedding. My DS's 1st birthday is on a Monday, so we will be doing his party on Sunday. My aunt and uncle got married on my 1st birthday, so my parents had a little party in the hotel room for me. I don't remember it one bit!

  • I know DH would not want to go, and I don't think I would want to go either.  That is DC day and it doesn't matter if he knows the difference or not.  Plus I wouldn't want to leave DC with a babysitter on his 1st birthday.

I guess I should add that DS will be at the wedding with us. My IL live in PA and said we could drop him off to stay with them while we are away. Yeah right! I just can't leave him for the weekend on his first birthday. Crazy IL's

  • Are these close friends?  If so, I'd say go to the wedding.  Like you said it doesn't really matter to the baby if the party is the week before or after.
  • I can understand wanting to celebrate on his actual birthday, but I have a 5 year old SS, and I have to say, it has rarely ever worked out so that we could celebrate on the actual day.  It is usually the weekend before or after.  Maybe do something small earlier in the day with just you, DH, and DS and then have his big party another day.

  • I say go. 6 out of 7 babies wont be hosting parties on their birthday, ya know?  We will have ours the week before.
