Toddlers: 24 Months+

if you did rewards for potty training...

when did you stop the rewards?  I started giving DS these organic Lolipops that I happened to have a stash of.  It has totally worked for us but now I'm regretting this unhealthy habit.  He had 3+ Lolipops yesterday and two today....his teeth are going to rot out of his little head:(

  • Could you do money? We would put change in his piggy bank. We told him he earned the gift so stopping didn't cause any problems. To this date, I don't think he actually had enough in there (I did this charade for a few weeks).

  • We started PTing a few weeks ago and only gave rewards for the first week or so...now she really doesn't need rewards nor does she ask for them.  We started out giving stickers, then pennies for her piggy bank, and then fruit snacks (Aunt Annies).  Now we will give her rewards when she steps outside of her comfort zone--for example, she peed in the potty at my mom's house the other day which is a new thing for her; it's the first time she had gone to the potty at someplace other than home--so my mom gave her a sticker.  I'm sure we'll have to start bribing her with some kind of treat to get her to go poop in the potty. She has been refusing to do that, even with the promise of fruit snacks, her absolute favorite!

  • I do use m&m's (we don't reward anythign else w/ food & she has days where she doesn't even get one, so I'm not bothered by using them) but I up the requirement periodically. First, just to actually pee on the potty earned one m&m.  Then once that was no big deal (2 weeks?), she had to tell me she had to use the potty in order to get one (not go when I reminded or asked).  Pooping on potty wasn't happening so she got a big ol' 2 m&m's for pooping on the potty. She still poops mostly in her pullup/diaper at nap & bedtime so I'll be sticking with that for a bit.  Once she is able to go without me reminding her & able to poop on the potty, those rewards will go away. I'll have to assess if there is a new behavior to reward or not (using potty in public? some other non-potty related behavior?).  Her brother is not PTed at all yet so right now he will get 1 M&M just for peeing on the potty (has only happened 1 time). She does not seem at all upset by the fact that he gets them for something different than her, she understands the 'rules'.

GL!  I would just change the rules. clearly the lollipops motivate him but that is a lot of sugar compared to something small so maybe change the reward too or save the lollys for something REALLY big & important.

  • A few weeks, consistently. Then we'd push it off his request by saying after dinner...sometimes he'd forget, sometimes we'd have to pay up :)

  • Try switching it up and offering stickers or something besides lollipops.... Or small cheap toys.  I got some of these little Disney figures (they come in sets) and DD got one for every time she pooped on the potty at first... now she gets the occasional Hersey's kiss but it's not really necessary.

  • DD loved Squinkies so I bought a bunch of them on sale and used them.  Eventually she stopped asking for them.  We then moved to bigger rewards that were further out to get.  She got stickers on a rewards chart and once she got a certain number of stickers she got the bigger reward.

  • We used mini m&ms.  We now use them for "Brave candy-" getting haircuts, taking eye drops nicely, etc.  It is a relatively short phase, I wouldn't worry too too much, but why not do a quick brush after the lollipop?

  • Agree once he's becoming PT you can cut back on the reward system.  In our final week, we did stickers and the last day we took DD to the $1 store to pick out a toy and a balloon.

  • At first we did rewards everytime he would go. 2 M's for poop and 1 for pee. After he a few weeks we were still having to ask him if he had to go peepee and bring him. He was telling us he had to poop about 2 months before he would tell us pee. So, we changed to he would only get a M if he told us he had to go. It has been a while not that I don't remember when we stopped. I know that he really stopped asking for them.

  • We stopped after a solid week of no accidents. We did a star chart though, we previously tried m&m's and found that he would "go" just to get the reward. The star chart wasn't so enchanting but he got very excited at seeing how many stars he had earned.

  • We are going to start next week with PT actually.  I had planned on Pez as a reward, hunted all over the internet and got LO a set of Handy Manny Pez, filled them up and put one in each bathroom and told him that when he sat on the potty and went he could have one.  One day he sat on the potty and sat and sat and politely asked for a Manny Candy so I gave him the dispenser thinking that he might actually go---nope, he sat there for 15 min and ate the entire container of pez, and then got up and left.  It hit me that I'd have a diabetic in diapers at age 10 if I kept this up so we are going to go with a stamp on the hand (ink) one for #1, one on each hand for #2.  Plus a star chart or fill-in chart, and once that is full we will go get a fish at the pet store.
