Remember this when you have MIL issues!

My MIL tried to buy us an infant seat from 1997!!!! 1997!!! Because it "looked" fine! I mean really... So just think of this laugh and go at least MIL is not trying to buy me a used carseat from an unknow person from 1997!

oh she also tried to give us a crib that was older than both DH and I... at least 28 years old... that has lived in a attic for 20 years... the drawback she told me... it needed a new teething bar...

So just remember this is what I deal with every day... lol... I try to sit back and laugh about it... because there is only so much you can do but smile...  I try to be as kind as possible... its just so funny sometimes!

FWI not against used items...

Our Pack N' Play she picked out used... she knows the owner

The Swing used from my work

Bumbo used from my work

all the clothes we have so far... used... Used is not that big deal to me... but the car seat is just a no no!

Re: Remember this when you have MIL issues!

  • It's great that you can laugh about it!! I try to do the same thing.  I know my mil's intentions are good and I try to keep that in my mind.  Yes- my mil told me my baby will die if I don't use a sleep wedge.  So I laughed it off bc what else could I do?

  • Does she know that safety regulations have changed? lol If someone tried to force stuff that old onto me I would just accept it and donate it to goodwill, I really don't like confrontation lol
  • Absolutely not. Just tell her that they advise to never take a used car seat and that they have 5 year expiration dates, not to mention if it was recalled that you would have not way of knowing since it is so old!

We haven't gotten anyting used yet, but I am not against it for the most part, as long as it is not a safety item and is in good shape.

My MIl tried to do the exact same thing when I was pregnant with DD1. We were visiting them and went to a garage sale one day. She knew I wanted a travel system and found one that was way over 10 years old and tried to talk me into getting it.

I am also not against used, but I had to draw the line with the used car seat (especially since it was way over the expiration date).

  • And car seats have an expiration date, which most people don't know - it's usually 5 or so years, and can be found on the bottom of the seat. I didn't know this before taking a foster care parenting class (H and I have been trying to adopt through the foster care system for the last couple of years).

  • Ugh, I feel you on the old stuff. DH's grandmother insisted on giving us her husband's bassinet when HE was a baby. Yes, this bassinet is over 80 freaking years old. It was rickity and decrepit but we took it home anyways and put it together.

We set our son in it ONE time for a picture so she could see we were "using it". After that I used it to set a few stuffed animals in it. Within one week the thing collapsed into a pile on the floor.

And she wanted us to use this every day for our child? I know she had sentimental thoughts about it and what not, but my child's safety is more important than an 80 year old crib. Needless to say I will not be putting DD in it even for just one picture.

  •   My MIL traveled to Syria when she found out her daughter was being induced. She spent a month there, during a WAR!

We tell her that she can spend all the time she wants in our L&D room until it's time for me to push - then I just want my hubs there. She flipped out! Apparently, I started a war. We live in Cali - she lives in NY. Now she doesn't think she's coming if she can't watch her 5th grandchild literally come into this world. She says what's the point.  o.0   Later - my husband is talking to his brother, who informs us that she wanted to deliver the baby like she did in Syria.  My jaw dropped. Granted, she was a L&D nurse A LONG TIME AGO - but I want a current DOCTOR to deliver my child.

Seriously... grandparents can do and say some pretty weird stuff. I think their brain gets filled with baby powder lol

All I can say to this is WOW - I'm not sure what kind of relationship you have with your mother in law, but I don't think I could have mine in the delivery room, let alone down by my vag to deliver my baby! I don't even want my inlaws at the hospital! (or to ever have a thing to do with my child, but thats a looooooong story...). Good luck with the war, but I think most of us can feel your MIL pain, even if it is a different situation!

  • Suddenly my MIL isn't looking so bad.... she's done pretty darn well ordering from Amazon. ;)

We got our crib used-not sure how old it is, but it's solid and belonged to Charles Schwab's daughter-and we've taken flack because it's a drop side.  We're securing the side so it can't move, but people still seem to think it's the end of the world.

  • This sounds like my mom.  She has zero common sense.

It was a great relationship until I starting dating her son. Then she slowly began to hate me. Now I try my best to stay on good terms with her - except ever since I got pregnant that's been a little hard.

I talked to my husband about what to tell her when she asked why she wasn't allowed to be in the room while I pushed, we both agreed using the "hospital policy" method would be the best way to go. I had no idea she would flip out the way she did. She demanded that we find another hospital even after we both explained that out of the five hospitals in reasonable driving distance, this was the best one. She would rather me deliver our son in a sh!tty hospital and be in the room than deliver in an amazing facility with the best doctors in the areas.

Now she doesn't even know if she's coming which at this point is fine by me. My hubby is crushed, but I'm not going to give up my comfort level and now well being just so she can see my vajayjay in action. lol

Wow - MILs have no place beting below the belt, under any circumstances.

  • Our first trip out to OH after our first was born, my mIL borrow a carseat from her neighbor so we couldn't have to bring it with... well I was worried when we walked up to the car and couldn't see the seat.  It was from about '96 a little plastic bucket w/ a thin cover- needless to say we went out and bought a new one to keep there, so it would never be an issue. Perhaps the craziest thing is we told her to get it inspected and she did- how in the hell does a 12 year old carseat (few years ago) pass an inspection???
