Talk to Me About Sippy Cups

Tell me what kind you use. Does your LO "get it"? We have tried the Nuby that has dual handles, as well as the dual handled Munchkin, neither of which DD cares for. I've tried to get her to drink out of a straw, which she can't (won't?), but if I fill the straw with water and drop it in her mouth, she's in heaven. Not concerned or anything, just looking for ideas and suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Re: Talk to Me About Sippy Cups

  • I have the Nuby double handle. She still doesn't quite get it, but I still give it to her to play with.

  • At our 6 mo. appointment the doctor suggested introducing the sippy by removing the stopper from it so she could figure out that by tipping it up water came out. We did this (while supervising and helping) for a few nights and then we put the stopper back in. She does fine now. We have quite a variety of sippy cups (different brands w/ stoppers and some Nuby ones that don't have stoppers) now she interchanges between them with no problem.

Oh, great idea! Our pedi also recommended giving her a sippy cup, but didn't have this brilliant idea. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!

  • we use the double handled Nuby also. I introduced it her at the same time as rice cereal. She's a pro now. The one she first learned on was one I found at Walgreens. I think it's a Playtex (Red and Yellow with Big Bird on it) that had a stopper. We don't use that one anymore cause the top is a beeeyotch to get off and she seems to have to suck too hard.

She thought it was very fun, but messy for us! We should have taken the cup with us to the bathtub but instead she just sat in high chair in her diaper with an absorbent bib on!

  • Munchkin with double handles. I held it for her to show her how it works.  Then let her fool around with it and she didn't get it. I gave it to her in the car over the weekend when we were on a long trip and she played with it until she figured it out.

That is a really good idea; thanks for that!

She already uses the Tommee Tippee pacifiers, so these'll do the trick!

Hadley was like that, did not get it at all... then one day she just did... now she will drink from most kinds of sippy cups. She still doesn't get a straw though.

This is how DD was. She didn't care for it , then literally like last week she just got it :) We also have the Nuby double hand one. We have a straw one but don't use it often. DD also LOVES water from a straw!

Great idea, thanks! We have got to get on the ball with this sippy cup stuff. DD will not use it. She will pick it up. She will bang it against anything she can find. She will chew on it. She will not drink from it.

That is how DD realized that water came out of the cup. She would chew on it and then slowly started sucking on it. If she is doing that, she will figure it out soon.

  • I've been offering a sippy cup to Saoirse for about 3 months now and she just figured out how to drink from it last week. I bought several different ones, but she likes the Nuby with the dual handles the best. She couldn't get the idea of holding it up to get the water out when she was sitting in her highchair, so I give it to her when she is done eating and is sitting on the floor playing. I think I was trying to help her too much by pushing the bottom up so she could get water, so I stopped helping and just let her figure it out on her own. As eventually got it. Now she loves her cup. She still holds it down and sucks for a few seconds before she remembers to hold it up, so she ends up sucking some air and then burping, but it works for her.

G has a Playtex sippy cup. We first introduced it when we started solids (about 5.5 months). It took her a while to figure it out, but she's got the hang of it pretty good now.

At first she really hated water. I would put the cup up to her lips, she would sip and then spit out all the water and look at me like "WTF is that?" She has warmed up to the water, now, and I think she likes be able to do it herself.
