Natural Birth

Home birth payment - getting insurance to pay?

Those that had/are having a home birth.  How hard was it to have your insurance reimburse or pay for your home birth?  What were the steps you had to take to start the process?

TIA.

  • Mine didn't cover either of my HBs.  HMOs almost never cover them in my state.

  • I have to pay up front, and then my MW's insurance person will submit a global claim after the birth (I don't need to do anything, she's got it covered). She said it generally takes about 4-6 weeks to get the reimbursement, and I'll probably get reimbursed for about 60% of the cost.
  • I have to submit my insurance info to their billing person and then pay at least half before the birth day. After the birth they submit a global claim and I get reimbursed for whatever is covered that I already paid. If my insurance doesn't cover anything (I don't know yet) then I will be billed the remaining amount at that time. My insurance just changed so I am waiting for new insurance info before submitting my insurance to the billing dept.

  • Mine is covered as out of network, too.  I'm only responsible for my out of network deductible.  I'm also trying to get it covered as an in-network exception but the billing person at my MW's office seems to think this will be a problem.  I'm in the early stages of the process right now but I'll keep you posted as we move forward.

  • Thanks, I'd love to get something paid and we have a plan the lets me pick any provider, so I'm crossing my fingers that something might work.

  • My midwife is an in-network provider for my insurance company, which does cover home births.  I will pay the same as I would in the hospital, but the overall cost will be much lower.  I have a $1000 deductible, then I pay 40% of the remaining cost.  All in all, I will pay about $1800 for the home birth.  At the hospital, my max-out of pocket would have been $6000, which I'm guessing I would have met.  BTW I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and live in Nevada.
