Baby weight and GD?

I had an appointment at my MFM doctor today. I had lost two pounds, but they didn't say anything since I was overweight before pregnancy. But during the ultrasound the tech kept saying oh the baby is measuring very big, she also said that since I have not taken my glucose test yet that I may have GD and that would be the reason. At the end she told me he weighs 2lbs 13 oz and I will be 28 weeks on Friday.

Then my MFM doctor came in and said baby is growing and he is NOT too big. And she also said she is pretty sure I will pass my glucose test just fine.

Has anyone had this happened to them? I guess I should listen to the doctor over the tech? Also, do you ladies know what your LO is weighing around this stage?

 Thanks!

Re: Baby weight and GD?

  • On 2/29, I was 26 weeks and LO was weighing 2lbs 4oz (59th percentile).  According to the chart on this site:  https://www.baby2see.com/medical/charts.html, 28 weeks average is 2lbs 10oz. So the tech had no right to say that.  Plus these things are plus or minus a few oz anyway.

I had my growth scan today too and I have GD.  Everything is looking good and I lost 4lbs.  lol.  MFM doc is fine and happy with things.  Don't worry.  Some techs (not all) can be overly excited.

  • With my first, she started measuring big weeks after my GD test (which I passed).  At my u/s 11 days before my due date, the tech repeatedly asked if I was sure I didn't have GD due to DD's size.  She was born that day weighing 8 lbs, 12 oz.  I failed my 1 hr test this time but passed the 3 hr.  By 21 wks, 5 days, this LO was measuring about 5 days ahead.  I expect her to be at least DD's size if not bigger despite not having GD with either pregnancy.

  • Actually, this is happening to me now.  I measured at 30 weeks, but I'm only 28 weeks and I took my Glucose and I passed.  I have to have a follow up U/S on 4/10 just to measure him.  I think because I'm 5 foot 1 that my dr is misinterpreting sp? LOL a big belly for a short torso..

  • I just asked my doctor yesterday how you all get your estimates, as I never get any.  She said they are so unreliable that she's stopped giving them.  She said she's seen too many c-sections done because they thought the baby was going to be 10 pounds, and then the baby was a very good 8 pounds.  So maybe that helps!
  • They can't diagnose GD based solely on the size of your baby.  I know a lady who has 3 babies all around 10 pounds and she didn't have GD with any of them.  I was just diagnosed with GD and I measured about the same as you at 28 weeks and my doctor said the baby was a normal size at that point.  I wouldn't freak out.
