DS #1 is 3 and I cannot remember for the life of me how we handled this for our 7 month (today!) DS#2.
He has had solids for only about 3 weeks, cereal, sweet potatoes and squash. I'm pretty sure I didn't even attempt finger foods for DS#1 until he was more like 9months and it took him a while to get it so I am not in a super rush.
Re: Poll: When did you add a second meal and finger foods?
We offer him food - whatever we're eating - whenever we can all sit down together to eat something. Sometimes that's morning, noon, and night. Sometimes just noon. Sometimes just night. I don't sweat it at this point. I always hope we can do dinner, but sometimes he's just too tired by the time it's ready.
At daycare (3 days/week), they give him a morning snack from time to time, and always lunch, and then I try to haul a$$ when I get home to have something ready for dinner before he's melting down, but that doesn't always happen.
So at least 3 days/week, he gets lunch for sure. The rest of the week is pretty up in the air.
He's been feeding himself since about 5.5 months, has never had a puree.
ETA: still no teeth here either.
I started P on homemade purees a little after 6 months. We started with veggies and then after I introduced fruits, I added a second meal. Probably about 3 weeks later. She was getting 1-2 oz of fruits in the afternoon and 2 oz of veggies at night but now she gets hungrier so she gets 2oz of fruit in the afternoon and 4oz of veggies at night. She also gets puffs sometime during the day because she likes the independence of putting stuff in her own mouth.
When we start meats (prob next month?) I'm not going to puree those. So I guess if you don't count puffs those will be her first finger foods. I might try giving her some cooked carrots cut up before that since they're soft.
