Who is having a growth U/S?

This was asked in another post but thought we may get more response with its own post...

I don't have GD or high blood pressure and I'm not on any medication but my Dr ordered a 'growth' U/S for my next appointment (at 31 weeks).

Is anyone else having one? Any specific reason? I didn't expect another U/S so I'm a bit surprised.

  • My midwife today said that I wouldn't get another one unless I was measuring too small or too big. Do you know what you're measuring?

  • We won't get to see our LO again until birth unless there are complications.  But there are other people I know whose doctors order u/s once a month as standard practice.  I think it depends on the doctor.

  • My Dr does them on all his patients at 36 weeks to check size of baby, placenta and fluid levels.

  • I am. I was measuring a week behind.

  • I have a low PAP A protein so I have already had 2 growth u/s's....1 at 24 weeks and 1 at 30 weeks. I have a final one at 36 weeks.

    This exactly.

  • I am 29 weeks and have to get one every month b/c I have SUA - 2 vessel umbilical cord and sometimes that creates small babies so they just want to make sure she is growing properly. I am sure your dr would have told you that @ your 18-20 week us though :) No worries - just more pic's... yeah!
  • My office does an u/s at 35w. I actually had one at 30w because at my 28/29w appointment the OB thought my belly was measuring small.

  • I have one this Friday... i get them done every 2 weeks because my baby is in the 3rd % for growth (IUGR).

  • I'm having them due to the amount of fluid. Doc wants to keep an eye on it.

  • Thanks for the replies Smile

I actually don't know what I'm measuring. My Dr is a man of very few words (just a lot of 'great, perfect, excellent, see you in 2 weeks!). At my 20wk US I was measuring a week ahead but I don't have a very big bump so maybe he thinks Baby is small? Either way, I'm excited to see Baby again.

Thanks again! GL with your scans!

  • I had one last Thursday at 28 weeks due to chronic hypertension. Baby was measuring 8 days ahead of gestational age, so I don't think I'll get another one - but we'll see.
  • I have already had 2 growth ultrasounds and will have another one at 35 weeks.  I have to have them done due to my first child was born less than 5lbs. (4.14 lbs) full term.  It looks like I will be having another tiny baby.

In most cases they are done to measure the size of baby and fluid amounts.  They better prepare the dr for the delivery estimated size of baby at delivery.

  • I got one done last week for no reason at all.I'm measuring exactly on time and no other issues at all. My insurance covers it and my OB regularly sends everyone who is covered.

  • I've had 4 so far.  Probably have 2-3 left unless I go into labor early.
  • I would've only gotten one if the MWs suspected an issue or couldn't tell if LO was breech or not... So far everything's OK and LO is head down, so I don't suppose I'll get it. I kind of wish that I had a chance to see her again, especially now that she's chunkier (our AS was at 17 weeks, so pretty early), but I suppose I can wait out the next 10ish weeks.

  • I have one next week at the hospital and then next month at the obgyn.  I have low Pap A and a "marginal" cord, so those are the reasons to check the growth.  But so far the growth has been fine, it's just that those issues have triggered the receipt of additional tests.

Does your LO have fluid on the kidney?? This is what mine does and why we get to have another u/s at 36 weeks.

Doc just says that there is a high volume of fluid supporting the baby, but the baby is also measuring big. I have my next u/s at 33 weeks, then probably one more before baby is due.
